Situated on the historic Mid Links in the town of Montrose, the Edwardian building of The Links Hotel is a handsome setting for the smart restaurant and 'Koffiehuis' within. The main dining room is an elegant and formal space, with a menu that blends Scottish and continental cooking, plus a Sunday carvery and grill. More leisurely meals are served in the easygoing coffee shop, offering a selection of pastries and hot drinks to diners relaxing in the sofas or at the bistro-style tables. Private dining on the first floor.
Since we were staying in the hotel for a few days and the reviews looked reasonable, we thought we'd try the restaurant but I have to say we were unimpressed.
The staff were really friendly and welcoming and the service was excellent but the food was a bit of a let down. Add to that the somewhat dated décor, including 70's polystyrene ceiling tiles, and it made for a disappointing visit.
We both had soup to start followed by steaks, one a fillet with Diane sauce and the other a sirloin with pepper sauce, followed by a couple of desserts. Add a couple of drinks to that and the bill came to a smidgeon off of £90 so it's not for the budget concious.
When we ordered we asked if the mains came with vegetables and were told they did so we didn't order any extras. The "veg" turned out to be mushrooms and grilled tomato, neither of which are vegetables. I suppose, at a pinch, you could call chips vegetables but I wouldn't. We also asked for medium steaks and got them a bit on the rare side of that (blood leaking onto plate). We were okay with that but some might not be.
The soup and the dessert were good but not enough to make up for the poor main and high prices. I doubt we'd ever go back there again.

This is a wonderful restaurant, with delightful staff and really deserves a mention
After Reading the excellent reviews on TripAdvisor, my partner and I decided to go to Indian cottage this evening for dinner.
We began by ordering 4 poppadoms - only to receive 3. In other Indian restaurants, they are usually served with a selection of chutneys and salads however we only got given one strange onion dish covered with a sauce. Upon tasting, the poppadoms were quite soft as if they had been sat out for a while.
We ordered pilau rice but received boiled rice. We ordered garlic naan but received plain naan. When beginning to eat the naan, we found 3 dark, thick hairs embedded into the naan itself which was quite off putting. We reported this to the waitresses and added that we had not received the garlic naan that we ordered. They were great in getting back to the kitchen to tell them to make a new one and we even heard them telling the chefs to make sure it was a garlic naan. A new naan was brought to us, alas no garlic yet again! Might I add, we were the only ones in the restaurant so it wasn't as if they were run off their feet with orders!
We ordered a chicken korma and chicken tikka pathia. The portion sizes were fairly small - we usually struggle to finish a whole curry, however we managed to finish these easily! The pathia sauce was disappointing - I order this everywhere I go and the sauce is usually rich with onion, tomato, herbs and spice. The sauce I received was thin and watery, coconutty without a herb or vegetable in sight! Most disappointing!
The redeeming quality was the friendliness of the staff! The two ladies up front were lovely and made the situation better than it could have been! The restaurant itself was very clean, just a shame that the kitchen made SO many mistakes on such a quiet night. Prices were reasonably high for a quiet high street in Scotland (similar to what you'd pay in Brick Lane, London). Not sure that we'll be returning any time soon.

Staying in Montrose overnight the hotel had mixed up and we couldn't eat - so looking around we decided to pop along here.
Arriving outside it looks, and indeed is, like a local pub. If driving through the town I doubt I would have thought to stop here for eating. However very glad we did. When calling to check availability, through arriving, ordering etc, the staff couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. Food was really nice - steak pie was excellent, and came with good veg. Often found that food in Scotland comes with no veg, or a cheap/simple salad designed to be cheap to discard. Not so here, as baked parsnips and such complement the steak pie well, and very tasty and well cooked. Had one of the specials for dessert, and very happy.
Naturally being also a pub, very extensive selection of drinks available.
If looking for a very good meal, great service in casual style, you can't go wrong here.

Family run small hotel only 2 minutes from Petrofac training school, we serve bar lunches, bar suppers, a fabulous high tea on a Sunday and hold our famous afternoon teas with a twist and mad hatters tea partys twice a month, booking is recommended. We have 9 en-suite bedrooms available and a well stocked bar with a good selection of malts and gins!
Despite its austere appearance from the outside, this couldn't be a friendlier family run hotel. All the staff were first class and we had an amazing meal all cooked to perfection, not an easy task for a large group like ours on Christmas Day with...MoreThank you so much for taking the time to post a lovely review, it’s always a great pleasure hearing how much our guests enjoyed their time here as much as we enjoyed having them. Hope to see you again.

4 of us popped in late afternoon for a bite to eat. Staff were polite and helpful and tables were neat and tidy. Food ordered and appeared promptly. Presentation and taste was very good although some Nachos were a bit burnt on my partner's plate. Cost was very reasonable too.
