Things to do in Montauban

There are surprisingly few quality restaurants in Montauban and the Ventadour stands out as being excellent value. The decor, also, is conducive - the vaulted brickwork and changing display of artwork providing additional interest. Parking in the vicinity is easy and it is located on the south bank of the river only a short distance from the city centre.
The food is most important, of course. The chef is very skillful, especially with sauces and garnishes and all dishes are beautifully presented. Service was smiling and perfectly paced despite some 30 clients at the peak. There are two menus - the daily at 14 euros, which changes weekly, and the grander 29 euro offering which we all ordered. There was a choice of starters, but we all went for foie gras mi-cuit: it was delicious and extraordinarily generous in quantity. This was followed by a perfectly cooked filet mignon (a point - pink in the centre). A choice of desserts included an very good tarte tatin or cheese. We shared a bottle of red Sancerre at 29 euros, but the wine list included a good selection of SW reds and whites at 15 euros and up.
We all enjoyed the experience of eating here and it is worth the effort of diverting if one is somewhere near.

You know you've found something a little "different" when you have a Japanese fighter fish on your table. (Grab another one from an adjoining table to watch some fun!). Seriously, this was a special find when we p[assed through this pretty medieval town last month. Only 6 others in the room at a quiet lunch, which was hugely enjoyable. Well presented dishes by a good-humoured waiter. Nice selection of 1/2 bottles of wine on offer too. The restaurant has a verty smart decor, and would probably take on an extra romantic dimension for dinner if one was staying overnight. It is situated on the bank of the river and is a little hard to find with your Satnav, but worth the trouble. You won't be disappointed. Do check the bill for any unexpected items though....

Ok, so this is my 3rd review of L'Estanquet but good venues need praise and consistency is all important. L'Estanquet deserves both. This was the first time we'd been for dinner so the menu was more expensive than the great value lunches, however the food remains of a very high standard, the staff are charming and helpful, the decor delights the eye at every turn and the meat cooked on the coals in an open fire is as good as it gets. Menu choices are wide and varied and the wine list has something for all tastes and budgets - among my favourite eating places. Don't miss it!

As all good tourists do we trudged the highways and byways looking for our evening venue. The fabulous Place Nationale looked promising but we weren't convinced. We were a bit grumpy as for reasons not entirely clear our hotel had closed because of an 'incident' and Booking.com had found us another room in the Hotel du Commerce. A fabulous pink brick building with very trendy public rooms. There, though, the trendy stopped. Our bedroom was one star down from basic. Grim. But I digress, the upside of our downside was that right next door was a restaurant that though not much to look at at seemed somehow to have elan. Perhaps because the tiny upstairs space also included the open kitchen and the chefs were busy prepping when we went in at 6.00 to book our table. Turned out there was a wonderful brick vaulted basement where we dined. We had the Menu d'hiver (winter menu) for 33€ and it was pretty darn good. The starter was a pastry wrapped cheese on a mushroom duxelles, and the main was cod. Now cod is an every day fish and by and large it is tasteless and watery. Not so here. Firm in flesh and high in taste is was excellent. Served with celeriac served three ways, and interesting sweet jus and pea sized onions that were extraordinary. It took us ages to work out they were onions as they were so small and almost fruity. Pudding was the least successful, chocolate brioche served with caramel, brandy ice cream, Chantilly cream and red currants. A fine idea but the brioche was stodgy and not very fresh tasting. But one small slip didn't distract from a cracking meal, with excellent service, good ambience and 30 seconds from our crappy hotel.

We have previously struggled to find a good lunch in Montauban. This restaurant changed our view. The menu is simple; about four specials of the day for each course and a similar number on the Carte. Each is a fixed price combination. That said the food was excellent; all freshly cooked and traditional in nature. Very much recommended.

La Maison is located just off a busy junction in north central Montauban and parking can sometimes be difficult. The dining area is comfortable and the service cheerful, but otherwise unexceptional. Given the prices, the food was a disappointment. The jambon pata negra starter was too thickly sliced and had too much sasuage and too little ham. The St Jaques dish was overpowered by the sweet peach accompaniment. Neither starter was good value for money. The main dish of sirloin steak was chewy but had a reasonable flavour and the shredded lamb dish (encased in pastry) was pleasant, but nothing to excite the palate. All in all a disenchanting experience.

First time in this pizzeria and won't be the last, very nice copious pizza, I know you should'nt go wrong with pizza but they are so many bad ones around, would'nt hesitate to recommend this place, good italian wine selection and homemade desserts to finish if you still have room left !
