Despite arriving as an important football match was reaching its conclusion we were made extremely welcome. Very little English is spoken but the menu does have a translation, the food is very reasonably priced, excellent quality and good portions. It is a very lively and at times noisy place but it was lovely to feel that we were with locals and experiencing their way of life.

We went to La Virgen for some rain forest hiking. When we asked for a seafood restaurant we were skeptical when we were advised that yes, there was a very good one. Well when we visitied, it ended up being better than "very good". Chef Carlos created an exceptional lobster plate. I believe that he said there were 12 "secret spices", but don't hold me to that as I'd enjoyed quite a bit of wine by that conversation.
The chef and his son joined us at the table and made us feel like family. If you ever get even near to this area - make the trip. The menu is limited to a handful of items that are prepared exceptionaly well.
The interior furniture is created from large slabs of nonsymetrical tree trunks, adding to the exotic ambiance.
Buen Provecho! Gracias Chef Carls por todo.

My amigo and I had lunch here after a morning at Nature Pavillion (and at NP owner, Dave's recommendation). We had a chicken casado and a guanabana juice; my buddy had a fish (corvina) casado and a papaya juice. The food was tasty but not memorable. The coffee, however, was really bad: weak and of poor quality. Why is it that it's so hard to get a good cup of coffee in a nation with such great coffee? So many restaurants and hotels scrimp on this - perhaps thinking that tourists will accept any coffee in CR as good coffee. Aaargh!

On route 4 just 300 meters from Hostel Islas del Rio on the bank of the river you will find this great roadside restaurant. We've been there twice for lunch and for dinner. Pollo asado (chicken roasted in a wood-burning brick oven) is so delicious. We enjoyed also the pasta with sea food. Prices are very reasonable.
The view of the Sarapiqui river seen from the restaurant deck is charming.
Highly recommended.

The staff was very attentive and pleasant. Food was nicely presented. Good value for big eaters. Located in the main road of La Virgen, Providence of Heredia, Sarapiqui is not hard to find. Their fried chicken is very good, fresh and flavorful. Nothing fancy but clean. They do serve many other choices than chicken.

This is a little pizza shop in La Virgen, which was recommended to us by our tent hotel reception.
It caters mostly to the locals, and isn't big on comfort or atmosphere, but the food is good and the prices are reasonable. The staff on the night we were there spoke no English, which gave us an opportunity, and a lot of fun, trying out our pidgin Spanish on the waiter who was obviously the young teenage son of the owners. Not sure which of us ended up the most confused!
We are an enterprising family with a lot of dedication to the kitchen. Come and enjoy an ideal place for travelers, perfect for those looking to make a stop along the way and then continue with their adventure. Enjoy our varied menu of fast foods and the specialty of the house "shrimp". Welcome and good appetite.
