This restaurant was poor from the get-go and not at all as you come expect in Japan where the standard of service is high and hosts welcoming. They make you stand on the steps with no greeting, acknowledgement or indication of how long the wait will be. After 15mins we were shown to a table only to find 2 to 3 other empty settings. The English menu is a limited selection of the local menu, even so they managed to bring a dish that we did not order and when questioned tried to pass it off as the one we had. It's a smoking restaurant with no segregation, tables on either side of us lit up. The steamed mushrooms and dumplings weren't bad but other dishes came out swimming in oil. Try elsewhere first!

I would have never expected such amazing food in Kusatsu - no offence meant of course. The food had so much flavour and tasted so lovely. Sigh..am stil salivating. We ordered pork cutlets - and I got fancy fried pork stuffed with cheese and my husband ordered a delightful tasting chicken with curry sauce. Totally yummy.
Slight walk uphill to get to this place but totally worth it

A block or two from the bus terminal is a casual family tonkatsu place where many locals frequent. We had to wait while a large take out order was being made! The place is comfortable, clean and the service was good...but best of all, the food was delicious. We stopped for lunch and had a great time!

Ristorante al Rododendro is a tiny restaurant attached to a Japanese-style hostel named Watanuki Pension.
You don t expect this in Japan, and even less in Kusatsu: a REAL selfmade and authentic Italian Restaurant!
The chef-Tatsu- has worked for several years in 2- and 3-star (Mantova!) restaurants in Northern Italy and brought home all the culture of the HIGH Italian cuisine.
He makes everything himself, you also see him working in front of you.
Although the recipees and the art of cooking are totally Italian, the material he uses is all from nearby and therefore very fresh...and not expensive...
If you are in Kusatsu and like Italian food- go to taste the menu at Rododendron. Call before- there are only a few tables.. Enjoy!!
