I asked my hotel clerk to recommend a local restaurant to get a lighter lunch. She told me about the Cafe Chris. The menu was a nice mix of salads, sandwiches, burgers, Mexican, and American fare. I chose the Turkey Bacon Croissant. While waiting for my food, I glanced around at the decor. It was decorated with model trains, train memorobilia, and photos of trains. When I left, I asked one of the waitresses who was the train buff, and she told me it was her Grandfather. He worked for the railroad, and opened the restaurant after he retired. The restaurant was patronized by many of the locals, who knew the wait staff personally, so there were friendly conversations going on all around me. There was a nice hometown feel about the place. My sandwich was good-nothing exceptional to note. Prices were average, sandwiches and burgers less than $10, dinner plates slightly more. I got plenty of attention from the wait staff, who stayed busy even as the lunch hour was winding down. It was nice to visit a local spot to see a glimpse of the locals, and get a good lunch. I would visit again if I'm ever in the area.

I've been going to this Dairy Queen since 1988! The food is consistently good and has the best air-conditioning in town! If you are making a long hot drive between San Antonio and the Coast? Skip the freeway and take highway 16! See Real Texas and Stop at Dairy Queen! If you are an out of state? This is the kind of Dairy Queen Larry McMurty was writing about long before anybody had heard of Lonesome Dove!

Most DQ's are pretty much alike, some cleaner than others, some have better service, some make better Blizzards. I usually have to have two or three Blizzards a week, so I stop here regularly. They do a good job on them and make them right. I also like to have the tacos once in a while for some reason. They have always been fresh and not too greasy.

I called in our order and it was ready and waiting when I arrived. The menudo was very good and the taco's must have been the same as the kids did not say a word from the back seat.

Original location of the local chain.
Very rustic but well tasting brisket, chicken, and really good sausage, all that served on butcher paper and plastic tray. No Michelin stars there yet good natured cutters and cashiers. We may not be back, this was our first drive through the town but if we are back this would be a great Texas outback venture. No cheap; half-pound meat plate will set you back 15 dollars, all that with beans and potato salad.. Now three days later our bellies are still in great shape..lol

Hotel clerk said best Barbeque in County was at HEB the supermarket. Knowing HEB could not possibly have a barbeque pit at the store I chose instead to head McBee’s. Ample parking and plenty of empty tables should have been my first clue, the pit was not smoking my second, and my third, tell tell, was the meat was in a 3 foot small glass case on the 20 foot counter, nothing on the counter but for the small glass case containing what appeared to be a small brisket, 5 or so sausage links, and I believe some ribs.
Got the two meat special, the meat carver meticulously weighed each slice to insure I did not dare get over the allotted amount of brisket, the last slice was so thin I almost applauded her ability to cut so razor thin. With the sausage they simply cut it in half and slice it up. For my two sides, I chose pinto beans and cole slaw. I added a few onions, pickles and jalapenos from the condiment section to my tray and headed for a table.
The smoke ring on the brisket was impressive as was the char on the meat. I don’t like adding barbeque sauce on my meat, as it masks the flavor of smoked meat; Now for the taste test; I had a difficult time cutting the brisket with the plastic knife, but finally was able to cut a small bite size piece of brisket, the brisket was dry, tough, old, and had a gristle the entire length of the slice. The meat had absolutely no taste, as if they forgot to season on the pit, reminded me of a cut of cheap roast that was not seasoned. Sausage was marginal but dry, the Pinto Beans had a twang to them, probably fresh beans added to last weeks that did not sell, the cole slaw had no flavor, the onions were old probably left over from weekend rush, the pickles were the bright spot of the meal, but how can you screw up opening a jar and dumping into a serving container.
After finishing my meal I noticed a glob of grease in corner of my tray, even the flies were repulsed. As I am writing this review my stomach is churning and my gag reflex is working overtime.
If I had a choice between McBee’s and a 4 day old burrito from the local convenience store I would head to the convenience store.
Be ye therefore warned.
