We had dinner here on Saturday the tenth of August 2013. I have known the restaurant for most of my life (I was born in Hoorn, grew up very near, currently based in India though)... it was known as one of the better and more luxurious Chinese restaurants around. I am talking about my childhood here... am 38 going on 39 now. My parents wouldn't go here because it had a bit of a pompous vibe to it. All a bit of an exaggeration of course but in those days the Dutch were very unwilling to spend any money on eating out. Chinese food was known to be relatively affordable and few were aware of how the Chinese had adapted their food to the taste of the Dutch. In fact one could argue that almost none of the dishes that featured on the menu back then ever existed in China or South East Asia. Dutch Chinese restaurants serve an odd combination of Chinese inspired dishes as well as some Indonesian ones, including the famous rijsttafel. Not having gone to this particular restaurant in almost a decade we decided to go for the classical Dutch-Chinese dishes among which foe yong hai (egg dish with tomato sauce and chicken), ku loo yuk (deep friend chicken in batter with sweet sauce), babi pangang (pork in tomato sauce, bit of an Indonesian oddity) etc. The restaurant actually does more innovative cooking as well but if you visit this place as a tourist it might be worth checking out the more classical Dutch-Chinese dishes such as the ones I listed above. Many will also be included in one of the many rijsttafels that they offer, many which seem great value as well. All in all this is a perfectly decent, slightly (though only ever so) more upmarket than your run of the mill Chinese restaurant in provincial Netherlands. Service is average but friendly, the decor is pleasantly kitschy and the location is central. Have fun!

One seemed like been sometime back. Light food for lunch gave us good feeling. Choose to look outside the window and see the nice view of the waters and some boats.

Based on our hotel, recommendation we had an outstanding dinner at this small restaurant close to the central square in Hoorn. A very innovative approach to fine dining with a selection of beautifully prepared and presented small dishes that our palates thoroughly enjoyed. This restaurant is an ideal place to linger over a meal and enjoy the evening. One of the best meals I have ever had anywhere in the world! I don't have any experience of Michelin starred restaurants but this one must be getting close. Also excellent value as dinner for two with a bottle of wine came in at under 100 Euros.
Was almost embarrassed when it came time to pay as credit cards were not accepted nor was Visa debit. A Mastercard debit, which we did not have, would have worked. Fortunately we had just enough cash between the two of us!
Otherwise than the method of paying the bill I can not find enough good words to describe this memorable experience.

While staying in fantastic Hoorn for a three week home exchange, we tried this cozy, comfortable restaurant due to the very good reviews here.
We have enjoyed Thai food in many countries, including Ireland, Australia, Italy and of course in many cities in the USA. . . this wonderful place did not disappoint.
Here is a place to relax and enjoy freshly prepared dishes to your liking. For example, my husband preferred vegetables in his coconut chicken curry to the standard potatoes shown on the menu. Our friendly waitress asked the chef to change the dish and it was no problem at all. I loved the cashew chicken. . . not too spicy . . . just right. The dishes came with a big bowl of steamed rice. . . which made enough for us to take some of each chicken meal home for dinner (with an added salad) the next night.
Great food, lovely ambiance, friendly service, portions large enough to take some home. Highly recommended!!!

Went here with my girlfriend and had a fantastic time finishing our 4 course surprise menu, accompanied with 4 very good wines. It was a little bit more special than other 'Western' cuisine. Wines were a very good match with the courses. Reason for the 4x is that the intern (?) was a little bit unexperienced and made some small mistakes. But overall, absolutely recommended!

The place may just look like a run of the mill cafe, but the food is fabulous! Ordered a glas of red while perusing the menu; it came with a glass of water and they brought some bread while we were waiting with herb butter
Our meals were cooked as ordered and surpassed our expectations!
Highly recommended!

If you are visiting Hoorn for business, leisure or just passing through. Make sure you visit this place. You wont be disappointed. The food is excellent. The portions are plentiful and the prices are sensible. The place has a great ambience, and the warm welcome you receive from the attentive staff as you walk in, is so like being in a tavern in Greece itself. Try the chicken, pork, steak, skewers (no 50 on the menu) if you are really hungry, but be warned you just might not be able to sample the delicious coconut ice cream served in a coconut shell with fresh fruit & cream. If you try it once, you will definitely be going back, as everyone else has who I recommended Zorba's to. Happy dining.

You know, there is an old English saying, "the devil is in the details"....
This unfortunately is the case with Lucas Rive. There is a lot of "good" at this restaurant, but unfortunately Mr Devil is making his presence known, and I think some effort needs to be taken to ensure that Lucas Rive does not follow the slippery slope downwards and loose standards.
I will start with the negatives first:
- Service is terribly slow. The restaurant was not full, and yet there were long waits at every stage ... long wait for waiter to take order, long wait for amuse Bouche, long wait for main meal, long wait for the bill.
- Staff not attentive. We spilt a glass of water on our table, we had to clean it up ourselves with our napkins because no waiter came to help despite a large puddle of water visible on the table and restaurant floor.
- Too much "selling" of drinks by staff. The way the staff sell the water is particularly shameful. One bottle of water at this restaurant does not cover three glasses, the staff adopt an unacceptable pouring style where they fill two glasses full and the third glass with the remaining water which is only a third of a glsss. Why not at least make an efffort to pour evenly ? But really the water bottles should be more generous in size !
- USA beef on the menu ! WHY ???? There is so much amazing European beef, why do you have to import USA beef which is stuffed full of chemicals ?
- Pastry section needs improving. The desert concepts are good, but the flavours do not come through in the execution.
Now, on the positive side:
- Ingredients are of high quality and cooked well. The quality of the fish cooking is particularly excellent and noteworthy.
- Sauces are of high quality, well executed and flavoursome
- The flavour combinations are innovative and well executed
- Plating is excellent, all dishes well presented and look appealing.
Overall a good restaurant, but for the prices charged the negatives I highlighted above are really unacceptable.
I struggled to decide on a star rating for this restaurant. Ultimately i decided on "average" because as good as the positive elements were, then negative elements really detract from the experience and, as mentioned above, are unacceptable for an establishment of this type and especially given the prices charged !!

Puur. Eerlijk.
Very good burgers. Even the cheapest ones are very good. You can choose a lot of toppings which makes it more expensive, but tastier as well. For a quick and good bite go to Burgers!
