Hawes is a small market town and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England, that was granted its market charter in 1699. Historically in the North Riding of Yorkshire, Hawes is located at the head of Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales; the River Ure runs to the north of the town and is regarded as one of the honeypot tourist attractions of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The parish of Hawes also includes the neighbouring hamlet of Gayle. It is 31.2 miles (50.2 km) west of the county town of Northallerton. The Wensleydale Creamery is a major producer of Wensleydale cheese.

Herriot’s Kitchen has become a firm favourite with Upper Wensleydale residents and visitors alike, priding ourselves on using freshly supplied, top quality local produce. Serving a selection of light lunches, refreshments and Yorkshire cream teas, complemented with home-baked cakes, Herriot’s Kitchen makes the ideal starting point for your visit to the area, and the perfect finishing venue to relax.
We visited this establishment yesterday , and were the only customers there at the time. Initially a warm welcome and the soup we had was excellent. However, things went downhill after then. The cafe quickly filled up after we arrived, mainly with groups of older ladies who seemed to be on a bus trip, and were wanting something before their journey back. A group of four ladies sat on the table next to us. After a while the gentleman taking orders approached their table, and one of the ladies explained about time constraints and asked if 3/4 of an hour was long enough to get something. He simply said 'I'll serve you when I can and thats how it is. It's just a shame you didn't bother to read the notices on the window sill'. He was referring to a couple of very small printed notices asking for the sills to be kept clear. I am sure if they had seen the notices they would have taken notice. One of the ladies then asked if the sandwiches were just with bread, his response ' If they are on the Sandwich list, yes they are bread, if they are on the panini list, then no they are not. Which do you want?' Another lady then asked what the soup was, and his reply 'The soup is on the board behind you' At this point the elderly lady had to twist round in her chair and crane her neck to see the sign which was directly about her head. Yes, there was a sign, and yes it must be frustrating when people still ask the question, but was there any need to be so rude. I cant believe they actually stayed there. I wont be visiting this establishment again simply because of this man's attitude.

Went just for a meal; most of the other people eating here were residents, staying overnight. Pleasant setting, relaxed lounge-type entrance, friendly host. Had Kangaroo starter, which was served with strawberries - an unusual combination that worked very well. Rather more meat than I needed for a starter (and a couple of pieces were rather chewy), but a good opening. The main course - Ghillies (game) Pie - was pleasant rather than excellent, lacking depth of flavour and having an unexciting mash/parsnip topping.

Ate here between Christmas and New Year 2017. Excellent service, extensive menu, good size portions and great food. Will certainly eat here again.

My wife and I had spent the day with my brother yomping around the Yorkshire dales, starting in hawes, visiting cotter force, hardraw force and returning to hawes for some afternoon food.
Hawes has an amazing dearth of places to eat in the mid afternoon. Everywhere stops serving food between about 2.30-5.30, which is no use to hungry diners. The fish and chip shop had a queue starting from about half past four! Fortunately the Penny Garth cafe steps up and opens all day, so we stopped in our our dinner.
Inside the cafe looks smart and clean, with a counter and white tables. There are games to entertain the kiddies, ideal for my brother, and staff are friendly.
The menu is simple, but has a good selection and reasonably priced. My brother had the scampi and chips, at about £7-8, my wife had omlette, chips and beans for about a fiver and I had a giant Yorkshire with chips, sausage and gravy for £5-6.
So far, so good, but as with everything in life you get what you pay for. I got three sausages on my Yorkshire pudm and enough chips to feed half of hawes, but in a town with so many puryevors of fine food these were some of the most cheap, tasteless and sawdust filled sausages I've eaten. Sorry, but they weren't good. The chips were clearly just deep fried from frozen as they were tough and tasteless, and the Yorkshire pud also seemed to have been bought in and reheated. Even the gravy looked like it had been made up from a packet. My brothers scampi was better, but again could easily have been frozen scampi, and he had similar issues with his tough chips. My wife did the best of the three of us with her freshley made omlette, but there were more frozen chips on her plate too.
Overall, we've given penny garth 4 stars, as it does what it says on the tin. This is a cafe, not fine dining, and given it was open and reasonably priced, it's cruel to be so critical, but a bit of home cooking would improve this place no end.

Don't be put off by the fairly steep stairs at the entrance or the large open room at the top, for good value food, freshly made in the kitchen, you won't beat this in Hawes.
It's not haute cuisine but it is good quality Yorkshire food served in large Yorkshire helpings. You won't leave hungry and you won't leave feeling that you have been overcharged.
If pubs aren't really your scene (though the Pantry is licensed) and you just want a good straightforward meal - try the Pantry. You won't be disappointed.

Visited here for lunch on a day out for my birthday. Was very impressed to see the choice of soups, and the soup was very good, however the member of staff we dealt with was extremely rude and it doesn't matter how good the food, there is no excuse to be rude to customers, will not be visiting this cafe again

Helen & Terry took over the White Hart in May 2016. 'We take pride in providing customers with a quality dining experience in relaxed and friendly surroundings. All of the food is produced in house from fresh by our outstanding kitchen team. We offer 6 cask ales which are kept to the highest standards along with a fine wine list supplied by the Wright Wine Company of Skipton. We strongly recommend booking a table in advance to avoid disappointment. We hope you enjoy your visit.
Friendly staff and prompt service. A dog friendly pub which is nice to see. Good menu and sitting in the bar by the fire is great on a cold rainy day.
The menu has a great selection available. The soup and sandwiches are good and recommended for a lunchtime break.
