Hatsukaichi is a city of some 120,000 people located in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. The name derives from a market traditionally held on the 20th of each month with hatsuka meaning "20th day" and ichi translating to "market".

This is not the normal eel you are going to taste--Japanese eel is another fish, similar in taste but priced a slightly cheaper. Nevertheless, Japanese eel has a chewy texture. I respect Japanese culture as they are very focused on doing one thing--JUST one thing to excellence--and you would find a different level of sophistication inside. This Japanese eel don is just one example. Taste one thing at a time, you would be able to feel the excellence.

Never have we had such a great oysters meal. Raw oysters, bbq oysters, fried oysters, boiled oysters, preserved oysters. And what a size! Really got to stop by here. If you don’t fancy the torii gate, come here for the oysters. You will not be disappointed.

Our first okonomiyaki was at Okonomimura in Hiroshima and we were very hungry as we had just hiked down from Mount Misen. My wife noticed this restaurant yesterday and suggested we pay it a visit. It was lunchtime and very crowded so they only had room at two stools at the bar. We ordered oyster ononomiyaki and it was a real treat as we could see exactly how it was cooked as their was a hot grill/plate the length of the bar in front of us, and 10 minutes later it was ready. The staff were used to tourists and spoke some English. The meal was cooked to perfection and the oysters were terrific. We would not hesitate to visit this restaurant again

We went here on a friend's recommendation and it is brilliant. It's a little hard to find, but is in a side-street near the Shrine. Ask one of the local shopkeepers as they all seem to know it. There is only one dish on the menu - eel which comes served on rice and with a stunning miso. There are no Reservations taken and it's only open at lunch. As it's also quite small, I'd aim to get there early. Apparently it has a Michelin star - whether it does or doesn't, it's an amazing lunch, that cost the grand total of about £30 for two people including beer and sake.

We love soft ice cream.
There were a few flavors on offer, but we ordered one vanilla and one momiji and vanilla mixed. The vanilla was better; the momiji didn't have a strong maple flavor which we expected. They were served in a cone along with a pusher cookie shaped like a rice paddle. The cone was a bit stale, the pusher useful.
This shop specializes in momiji manju and we did sample some and purchase two. We aren't great fans of manju but when on Miyajima you must eat at least one.

This place is always crowded for a reason; it specializes in deep fried momiji manju, which are delicious. You can pick one of three fillings, including custard or cheese, and then your order is made fresh while you wait. Both fillings are delicious, although I was partial to the custard. There are places to sit inside while you eat and there's free tea from a machine.

The only place to enjoy oysters casually all the year. The most historic and popular restaurant. The staff is also friendly. We offer the most reliable Japanese cuisine in Miyajima.

Really yummy cakes to eat with green tea. A good place to take a short rest while sightseeing and browsing the shops.

You can rest and seeing the Itsukushima Shrin at this cafe . And also you can feel lovely time with the ebb and flow of the tide. We drip a coffee one by one at the time . We have vegetarian Japanese style risotto and tomato chicken curry.
This was an impromptu lunch stop, we intended to go back to the tourist orientated places, but , attracted by the English menu, stopped off here. It looks great, air conditioned, with eclectic furniture including rocking chairs and a settee with a great outlook onto the sea. There's a limited menu, but the chicken mushroom and tomato curry was one of the best things I've eaten in Japan. Wide drinks menu, reasonably priced with impeccable service, and ambience, it seems a world away from the noisy cafes clustered just a few minutes away. It's a little out of the way but go find it, you won't regret it. Turn right at the shrine exit and keep going towards the aquarium, it's on the right, on the waterfront.
