Where to Eat in Gulfport: The Best Restaurants and Bars

April 14, 2018 Vivienne Hutton

Gulfport, Mississippi, one half of the Gulfport-Biloxi section of the Gulf Coast, was very nearly destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. The city has been gradually reconstructed, and the surrounding natural areas have been rebuilding themselves as well. Visit the barrier islands that form Gulf Islands National Seashore, a parkland along the Mississippi Sound. A ferry runs from Gulf Port to Ship Island, with unspoiled white beaches and tidal pools, boardwalks and historic sites to explore.

May be tasty but cook/presentation lacking with other great choices in area. Oysters shriveled in their presentation and tuna sandwich was more bread than tuna w/ mediocre fixons. French fries overcooked. May want to check quality control before leaves the kitchen.

The Chimneys

Recently re-opened, destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. Fine Dining.

Reviewed By The_Loup_Garou - Phoenix, Arizona

I was surprised how long ago it was, that we last dined at The Chimneys in Gulfport. We usually get back about every 18 mos., but it was December, 2015, since we dined there.

The Chimneys is a favorite of ours on the MS Gulf Coast, and has been for many years – from well before Hurricane Katrina destroyed the property.

Due to some family schedules, we decided to do Brunch there, and thinking back, it was the first time doing so. Usually, we just do Dinner, so we were looking forward to something a bit different.

We reserved their earliest seating, 11:00am. We were warmly greeted, and promptly seated, right at the front windows, looking out over the lawn, and the beach, at a 4-top. Though there was sparkling wine with Brunch, I opted for a couple of bottles of still wine instead: Simi Sonoma County Chardonnay ‘16, and La Crema Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ‘15. I was a bit sad to see that the wine list had not expanded, but then the Gulf Coast is not really known as “wine territory.” Cocktails and brews rule. Also, with the ABC laws, maintaining a decent wine list has got to be tough. At least we had these two wines, though I saw a lot of the La Crema on this trip, as it was the “top of the line,” on too many wine lists. Over the course of almost a week, it was pretty much the same wines, over and over, and it made little difference, whether one was dining in a casual, or fine-dining restaurant. The stemware was adequate, but that was about all that I can say. The temp on the Chardonnay was a bit on the cold side, but we let it warm a bit, on the table – saved the server from needing to bring a bucket of ice.

We were in the area, which I would typify as the “front dining room,” and it takes up the full-width of the front of the house. There is a dining area behind it (several large tables there), the bar, and then the front porch. Though it was a lovely February day, it was a bit too breezy to dine on the porch, however lovely that area is. As the front of The Chimneys is mostly windows, and French doors, this are is bright, and then, there is the view across the lawn, with giant live oak trees, draped in Spanish moss, and beyond (across Beach Blvd/US Hwy 90) the beach and Mississippi Sound, a part of the Gulf of Mexico. Our table was nicely set, and adequately large for our party of 3, and the wines. The tables are well-spaced, but ours was close to one set of French doors. Our hostess pointed that out, but we chose to sit there anyway, and I had no issues with the coming and going of the patrons, or the staff. Nice though, that the hostess made us aware of potential issues.

With The Chimneys, one can order from the Brunch, or the Lunch menu on Sunday, and we decided to do a bit of mixing, and matching:

Seafood Gumbo – very good, and they made good on the promise of a “dark roux” version
Chimneys Crab Cakes – also very good, with a nice rémoulade sauce
Trout Meunière Almondine – excellent version of this dish, and one of the best I have had in a few years
Grits & Grillades – good, but Grillades a bit tough
Shrimp & Grits – very good dish, and the Goat Cheese & Cheddar Grits were quite good

There was also a nice Green Salad, with crispy croutons.

Our service was very good, and we wanted for nothing, with the possible exception of a broader wine list, and nicer stemware. We will definitely be back, and hopefully sooner than 2.5 years!

First: Shrimp Etouffee (over rice) Platter was good with shrimp coleslaw, hushpuppies, and popcorn shrimp. Second: Crab Claw Basket was not all bad. The hushpuppies, potato salad, shrimp slaw, and the stuffed crab (extra) were good, but the crab claws were greasy and most of them were so small that all you tasted was the greasy fried batter plus there was one fried oyster that was not part of the menu description.

Its been awhile since we visited here vut ate a birthday supper here last night. Great atmosphere and food. Seems to be alot of locals earing here each time. Only thing is the menu said our fried meatballs were in mozzarella cheese sauce and they were in rotel cheese. This would be important to know before you order these. Otherwise food was good.

I really wanted to like this place but it has a dull, cafeteria-like atmosphere ( filled with casino customers probably eating with a bunch of coupons) and the service was bad ( ie. slow and not attentive ).

The Amberjack special is worth trying ( $17 for a big piece of fish served up on creamy spinach with a cup of gumbo ) which is something they’re offering for the month of February.

We randomly decided to eat here during our sons birthday outing on the coast. The server was the best. We could see the beach-which our 6yr old loved. The fried pickles are amazing. Only complaint was husband's streak was cooked wrong but they attempted to correct it & "quick cooked" another one & it had no flavor.
