Things to do in Gori

Gori restaurants tend to be a bit dark and unfriendly looking, some like to display animal trophies on the wall and in the window... if this is not you're thing, Cake House is a wonderful, welcome change. Bright, open cafe with relaxing wicker chairs, glass coffee tables and a sunny outlook. I didn't see a no smoking sign but I also never encountered any smokers on the 3 occassions I visited. I nice display of cakes are available (I especially like the Tiramisu) and one type of pizza, khachapuri and a selection of coffees and cold drinks. Free WI FI is available throughout. Cafe is right near Stalin Park. A separate function room is available for birthday parties and a range of large cakes are available for take-away.

Coffee House does not have a great atmosphere but it does make very tasty, if a bit strange, pizza. Waitress will ask you if you want mayonaise on your pizza (not a question I'm usually asked when ordering pizza). But it tastes really good. It seems they slather on a whole-egg style mayonaise just under the cheese and it makes it go really light and fluffy. A range of bliiny are also available as well as cakes, soups and salads. One stand out feature of this cafe is that they serve breakfast! You may like to consider this option after you've tried the uninspiring breakfast in your hotel. Cafe also has free WI FI and air-conditioning.

This is a 24 hour chain restaurant. If you like Khinkhali- this is the place to go- some of the better khinkhali I've tried in Georgia. Also they serve salad, meat dishes and breads. It is a popular place for locals to go for a beer and a smoke after work to cool off from the intense heat of Gori summer. The airconditioning is cold but the smoke is strong. If you're not a smoker, better to eat before 6pm.

The “hunter” restaurant provides cosy and special environment for its guests. You can taste delicious Georgian traditional and Persian cuisine. Looking forward to your arrival
We visited this restaurant a late December afternoon, when the temperature was not substantially higher inside than outside. It all started well, with a tasty hachapuri and eggplants with walnuts, but it went very wrong with the main dishes: unremarkable kebab and dry, twice cooked pork chops. Poor house wine. The bizarre decoration just adds to the oddity of this restaurant, but there aren't too many options in Gori, so you may end up here anyway.

Funny thing to eat soup at Champs Elysees Cafe but to see from the window not the Paris but Stalin avenue in Gori)) I appreciated Georgian humour to name cafe after Paris Champs Elysees. Mind that there is nothing French in that place, and it won't be good choice for a romantic evening. The mashroom soup we ordered was salty.

The Sport Cafe was recommended in our guidebook for unusual khachapuri - sadly the one with beetroot leaves and sour cream wasn't available when we visited, but we were able to try a khachpuri filled with cheesy mashed potato, which made a nice change from just cheese.
The place is big and was pretty empty on our visit so service was quick and efficient if not massively warm.
The meal cost about 18 GEL for two good-sized khachapuri and a carton of juice.

This very traditional Georgian restaurant is situated nearby the Uplistsiche Cave town and it is a very good place to have a bite and a taste of local wine if you are visiting the site and you feel hungry. Friendly basic and tasty Georgian food in a traditional place

Brusque, unfriendly service initially.Quick Delivery of dishes but homemade wine pricing confusing&proved expensive for tourists. No atmosphere. LeDepo much better and cheaper.
We three middle aged British guys had arrived in Guest House Eleni in the late afternoon from Mtsketa via a taxi (50). We take taxis rarely taken but on this day (Monday 2/10/17) it was raining heavily and convenient as taxi from Guest House Verdant Green (unlisted on TA but excellent) to Bus station in next village north then waiting for a Mashutka in the rain with three fares was daunting.
We'd had no breakfast or lunch so were hungry. Our host at GH Elene recommended Chinebuli and I found it was #1 on TA listings despite many diners' Reservations. It was also the closest being at the end of the parallel road (NB GH Elene is also listed on a map and b.c as in a field/industrial estate on the other side of the river!). We took a chance as it was still raining heavily at 17:00 when we half ran the very wet way down the street to the corner restaurant we saw on the map app and TA location.
It took 35 minutes to dodge the puddles, gushing drains, overflowing open gutters/streams, lakes and splashing cars to get to the restaurant. We were soaked after the 1.5km trek and the sight of this corner restaurant was most welcome. No name discernible though in the pouring rain.
We entered into the largish, relatively warm and dry cafe like space with a big TV showing music vids fairly loudly and a few people dining. We chose the corner table with a view of the tower of the Stalin museum (we'd visited in 2010 so were in Gori to see the cave town this time). Next to the table was a bucket collecting drips from the leaky roof. No problem. We disrobed to dry our clothes on backs of chairs adding to the wet floor as they dripped. We did not displace or disturb anyone.
The menus were presented quickly and described the usual dishes at a good price. I was a bit confused as the cover of the menu said 'TIME Café & Restaurant' but my phone map app conformed we were at Chinebuli! No other restaurants nearby were visible, only a fast food outlet (opposite) with owners looking gloomily into the rain as no customers seen and a very busy bakery (even in the rain!) on the opposite corner.
We saw and wanted a litre of white and saw the Chinuri Draft at 5 which we assumed was a litre as the place was not fine dining and we'd had it at that price in similar style restaurants. The Natakhtari beer was cheap too at 2.5 each, although not specified volume. The waitress eventually came after some time (we nearly walked out but we had to redress!) and we asked about the wine. It was 5 per glass!!Strange as we confirmed a whole proper bottle of wine cost 20! A colleague was summoned and she confirmed in English that it was 5 a glass and that they only served half litre carafes at 20-25 each so as we discussed it and hesitated so they just walked away and ignored us for a few more minutes, oh well. We nearly walked but it was still pouring and we were still wet. So much for Christian Charity, they can't even do Christian Business. We decided we would not have a full blown meal as they seemed to be diddling us (see later regarding two local guys). There were no volumes written on the menu (see pics). We decided on three cheap beers and only one course each, then to move on after we'd dried out a bit and the rain had subsided.
Eventually the waitress returned and we ordered the basics:
3 x Natakhtari (7.5), Mushroom Soup (5.5), Caesar salad (9), Mushroom Khinkale .8 x 5 = 4
Total 26+3service = 29 extra waitress service tip unlikely!
The beers arrived in .4l glasses, fair enough as still an ok price but not cheap in this supposedly cheap town.
The Caesar salad came first in good time surprisingly (actually recommended by our host) and was a few chunks of warm chicken, strong cheese flakes, a ripe tomato sliced into quarters and lightly toasted croutons. As usual the Ceasar style was different yet again but it was tasty though! I shared it with my friend who is keen on them (without the chicken as he's a stricter veggie) and he agreed it was good.
The mushroom soup came in a short time and was a very tasty broth with dhunks of potatoes in the mix.
By 18.40 the mushroom kinkhale arrived and were big, soft dough and quite tasty.
In summary the service was very slow at first (maybe they were just waiting for us tourists to decide?) but sped up (maybe they were trying to get rid of us as we made the place look untidy with our jackets and hats drying (so sorry we did not take a taxi or hire a car as we are in a budget!). The cafe got busier as dusk fell, as did the bakery which proved great for people watching!
Towards the end of our meal we saw a couple of local guys with a whole litre carafe of white wine between them. I bet they did not pay 40-50 for that!
Music was mixed pop, ambient at a reasonable volume so no problem although the TV was as usual distracting.
Unfortunately as usual each table had an ash tray so some people were smoking. Such is life here.
By 19:00 we had dried our clothes sufficiently (shoes still soaked though) and the heavy rain had subsided so were ready to move on and explore the Gori Monday evening life!
I ordered the bill and it came out exactly as reckoned 28.60 including kitchen service so we left a 1.40 tip to round up to 30 as the service in the end was fine, if a little Brusque.
As we left the screensaver on the entrance computer said 'Chinebuli' my friend confirmed.
We left to make our way the 600m through the triangular Stalin museum park to El Depo (which I looked up earlier on TA and found reliable good reviews). It was at the far end of the park on the right. It wa a very different place, see review!! We were made to feel most welcome despite not being soaking wet! It was far cheaper too!! This is reflected in the relative ratings!

We enjoyed classic Georgian food on the shady patio. Being July, we ordered mostly fresh fruits and vegetables, such as cucumber, tomato, watermelon, and mushroom, some raw and some cooked. We also had classic bread. The patio behind the main building was shady and cool on a hot day. The service was excellent.

We've decided to have lunch there before heading to the next city. Food was good. Not very typical though but we have managed to find some local specialties. Staff was very friendly and overall experience good #Sahtein
