Overlooking the Mississippi River, at the foot of Eagle Bluff, the tallest point on the river. Wisconsin's oldest operating tavern and original to 1894, also features The Absolute Rock Bottom Pub and is home to the 1860's recipes of The Fountain City Brewing Co. 15 Foot pressed tin ceilings, hardwood floors and hand carved back bar, tables, etc. Soon to be listed on the National Historic Register.
After reading so many positive reviews, my husband and I were excited to try this pub as part of our honeymoon trip.
When first arriving, we were impressed by the restaurant's unique scenery. However, this positive impression was quickly diminished by the apathetic demeanor expressed by most of the staff.
Apart from our orders being taken after a group who came in 15 minutes after us, never receiving a beverage that was ordered, and our appetizers tasting microwaved, there was a label left within our pizza. The one highlight was a server who asked to refill our waters after our own waitress hadn't been seen for about half an hour.
Maybe we came on an off day, but our experience was less than pleasant.

Great coffee, great food and great books. Best place in Winona to hang out, eat, renew.
This cafe was recommended to us and we were not disappointed. Trendy vibe, lots of room, and unfussy, clean decor. Just stopped in for a small bite in the afternoon sharing a Turkey and brie sandwich on homemade bread with pear chutney. So good! We were happily surprised to find they served wine and beer as well. Wish this place was in my town!

We tried the maple bacon long john, a glazed croissant, an apple fritter and a glazed raised donut. All fantastic! You can tell these are homemade treats--the look and taste stand out compared to others. We especially liked the frosting and bacon combo on the long john. Best donut frosting I've ever had, and a great ratio of frosting to bacon, with the bacon being thin enough, not too chewy, and easy to bite without pulling the whole piece off. As it's nearly Christmas, we spied Santa & Mrs Claus (live) in the window later that evening as we passed by--a helper was passing out treats on the sidewalk. Fun!

While camping and traveling along the great River Road, we were told that Fortunata's is a great little place. We stopped for a mid morning coffee break. Joe, the owner is personable and we enjoyed nonstop conversation that had all of us laughing. Good coffee, great view, eclectic decor...worth the stop.

Across America there are small town diners that become part of the fabric of the community by consistently serving friendliness and great food. Bonnie Rae's is just this kind of place.
I stopped at Bonnie Rae's a few weeks ago while riding my bike from Minneapolis to Madison WI. Rollingstone is a perfect place to stop as it is at the bottom of a really great hill. The community is picturesque in the river valley. Bonnie Rae's is in the central business area (you won't need directions). Primarily a breakfast lunch place they are open til 2.
The food was pretty typical cafe food, cooked fresh just for you. The people here are incredibly friendly and the food was great.
Also, don't forget to get some of the homemade dessert whatever it is.

...I didn't want to leave! I'm a traveling OB/GYN (drcathylbagleydotcom) visiting the area on business. This place's vibes sang out to me on the way elsewhere to dine this afternoon. I was enticed by its low-key, Boho melody and had to check it out! Let's just say, I wasn't disappointed! It's the place in town to go to chill with a laptop, tablet, book or paper for coffee, soup, salad, sandwiches, pastries and light conversation. It's wi-fi friendly and very homey.
WARNING: it's extreme homey-ness will impart a "hang-out-all-day" vibe, which is bad if your like me just stopping through for a refueling before getting on with the day's business!
It's superbly located not far from college happenings, quaint area shops, Levee park, museums and other area attractions. And, parking is ample, around the corner in a public 2-hr free limit lot. The service is fast, friendly and on point. The establishment is well kept and clean.
It's moderately-priced: I got the half hoagie sandwich and salad combo with a drink for $13. It was great and satisfying.
I highly recommend you check out The Acoustic Cafe. It's food and vibes are mad!
Peace.
Out!

We had heard about this place so a group of us drove down to Fountain City to give it a try for their Friday all you can eat Shrimp and Fish. It was well worth the trip. The service was great and the food was excellent. I had the salad bar and though it was not too large it was very good. We will be back!!!

For a small town roadhouse type bar, the food is top notch! Great burgers, the pizza comes loaded with toppings, and the Friday fish fry is the best I've had in years. Give it a try, you won't regret it.

What a wonderful, hospitable place. Discovered it while riding motorcycle along the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River. This friendly stop is on the south end of Fountain City, Wisconsin, right on the river side of Highway 35. It is in the same building as Brone's Bike Shop. The outside seating provides excellent views of the Great River. What a way to enjoy my ice cream treat. I love other places, but this ice cream/coffee shop provided great value and hospitable staff. By the way, if you're into bicycling, the attached shop is well worth your visit. What beautiful machines, and service there too.

We had dinner here based on TripAdvisor. It was busy but the wait was short. Our server was quick and attentive. The food was typical bar food but tasty. It's in an old building downtown and the parking was good on the street and a close by lot. Food came out quickly and was hot. Would recommend this place if you are in town.
