I have been to the Pioneer House a few times recently, as I have just moved to the area and it came recommened, and it is never great. First time I ordered the crab cake eggs benedict and the crab cakes only tasted of onion. Actually the onion taste overwhelmed the entire dish. Next time it was for the prime rib that came with a tough Yorkshire pudding and gravy that looked like thick brown sludge. Last time was for lunch where the server suggested the tortilla soup with a side of rice to bulk it out to what was to be a spicy & flavourful dish. Nope, bland. Service was average unless you were a regular then the staff went out of their way.

We dropped by for a late lunch. The menu is basic but good variety of choices. We had the grilled cheese with salad and Texas burger (no patty) and fries, followed by a apple rhubarb pie. All food was nice. The espresso machine was not working so we could not get a latte. Friendly service by the staff here. Glad we stopped by.

Their clubhouse is amazing, fries are really good!!
Considering how busy it was, we were acknowledged as soon as we walked in the door. We appreciated every aspect of their service!! Sure made us feel welcomed!!
*Seating is amazing too, lots of privacy in a majority of the restaurant.

Family owned and operated local hotspot for craft beer, local wine, fresh food and house-made desserts!
Just Jake's reminds me of those chain restaurants like Montana's or Kelseys where the menu is wide and varied with comfort foods like burgers, steaks, soups, salads and other trendy choices. But I like it better here because everything tastes fresh and home-made. The atmosphere is casual and family-friendly and the prices are very reasonable. Friendly service. RECOMMEND.

We wanted soup and the staff was very proud of the home-made broth made lovingly and light for their phos. It was good and ingredients are fresh but we can find similar food items elsewhere for cheaper. The staff is very nice and they definitely have a dedicated clientele who are treated like friends. It was a long wait for our meal though so don't come hungry and in a hurry.

Nestled in the tranquility of picturesque Genoa Bay on Vancouver Island, about 1 hour north of Victoria and only 20 minutes from Duncan, the Genoa Bay Café has rewarded guests with one of the most delightful dining experiences in the Cowichan Valley.
Came here for our second anniversary dinner. We come every year and also on special occasions. The food is always amazing and fresh. The staff are professional and relaxed, making you feel very comfortable. Make a reservation when you go, especially in the summer months. Definitely recommend this to everyone!

Called here for a lunch one day and was pleasantly surprised by the Shipyard, it was my bias that I was not expecting much however the food was great. Staff very friendly and attentive and a pleasant location overlooking a busy little marina.

This was my third visit and as before, everything was just excellent. The food, the aroma, the ambience, the service.... Just 5 Star all around. 5 levels of spicy-ness.... Mild, Medium, Hot, Indian Hot and XXX Hot.... I've always had the 'Hot' level which is pretty spicy so the other higher levels could be 'Phew'! ---- Be sure to make a reservation or you may not be able to get in on certain nights

A well established local hot spot, we are famous for fresh food and hand crafted beer; as well as fun, energetic staff and a great atmosphere!
We've been here regularly over the years and were there recently. The food has always been decent (pretty good pub-style food - nothing fancy, but good) and a good selection of beers. We'd always been there either as a couple or with friends (other couples). This time we phoned and asked if we could get a reservation for eight people as we wanted to guarantee a table. To my surprise the guy on the phone said they only take Reservations for 15 or more people. What the hell? Why, I asked. He mumbled something about having to get extra staff and blah, blah, and that was the policy. What a crock! This place just lost eight customers due to a stupid policy. I won't make an effort to go back there (especially when I need a reservation). If they can't be bothered to accommodate us, then we can't be bothered to go there (there a LOT of other options!!).

What a pleasant dining experience we had last week at The Old Firehouse Wine and Cocktail bar after stopping briefly in Duncan, B.C. They offer a wide selection of unique and familiar cocktails. I enjoyed the Expanded Elderflower Cocktail...a summer treat. The menu features a good selection of local produce and meats. We enjoyed the roasted halibut with shaved asparagus & broccoli salad, fennel herb purée + heirloom tomato and the Firehouse burger with in-house ground Quist Farms chuck, cremini mushrooms, truffle mayo, arugula served on a brioche bun. The service was prompt and friendly and the food delicious...definitely worthy of a stop. I spoke to the owner, Jeff, and marvelled at how he designed and crafted the interior using magnificent pieces of re-cycled wood such as a large beam of fir from a Vancouver Island logging bridge to become the main bar. A work of art! We look forward to the next time we pass through.
