In town on business, colleagues stopped to eat supper. Wonderful bacon wrapped shrimp with just the right amount of jalapeno kick. One of my co-workers had the broiled seafood platter which was very good but a little "disconnected" according to him. My other colleague and I both had the Guitreau which was fabulous. No dessert. Too full! Very good!

We are visiting River Road plantations and wound up here and tried the Grapevine. The crab stuffed mushroom appetizer was good- the service was prompt and very pleasant. I had the crab stuffed redfish and really enjoyed it. My wife had the crab stuffed chicken breast and found it too salty. Still it was a pleasant visit.

I am not one for tours, however this tour was awesome! The house is in such good shape, so much history. Our tour guide was even grander than the house its self, Susan Forman. Susan was incredibly entertaining, made the house come alive. I highly recommend seeing Houma's House and make sure you ask for Susan!

Latil's Landing

Latil's Landing Restaurant is located inside historic Houmas House Plantation and Gardens. Dine in the intimate 250 year old rooms of the Mansion. Elegant, Romantic and great cuisine. Named one of the Top 20 restaurants by Esquire Magazine, and One of the Top 100 Restaurants of the World. Open Wednesday through Saturday Evenings, we offer both a 7 course and 9 course Tasting Menu. Each course allows guests to choose from several options. A dining experience to remember for a lifetime. Very romantic and great for celebrations.

Yes, the food was good. But the portions were minuscule. The menu is described as "prix fixe" but it actually a "tasting" menu. Believe me, all you get is a "taste." $65 for three courses was a rip off. Let's break it down..... At $65 for three courses, that would equate roughly to $15 for starter, $40 for main course, $10 for dessert. Here we go: My first course, for $15, I got 1 (one) shrimp and a tablespoon of grits. The $40 main course was the 4 oz. filet (in fairness, the 4 oz. portion was disclosed), accompanied by five paper thin slices of potato, each about the size of a quarter. Also included was 1/2 (one half) of a tip of a single asparagus and 1/2 (one half) of a baby carrot. The $10 dessert was probably the best value - a half-dollar sized piece of chocolate cake with a teaspoon of ice cream.

We "splurged" on the wine pairings which were remarkably uninspired. We ordered very different items but were served the same wines with each course. No real attempt was made to pair the wine with your specific food choice.

Service was barely passable. The waitress was doing her best, but she was fully responsible for all five tables - from pouring the water to busing the tables, to everything else in between.

I just walked away feeling like the whole thing was skimpy. I used to love this place but I won't be going back and I won't recommend it. It has become a tourist trap.

DON'S Seafood

DON'S SEAFOOD More Than Eighty Years of Exceptional Seafood South Louisiana locals and visitors have been drawn to DON'S authentic Cajun cuisine for more than 80 years. Menu selections including traditional Landry family recipes, and more recent original creations like Zydeco Shrimp, are well worth repeat visits. Many stop in daily for oysters on the half shell or boiled crawfish in season. DON'S SEAFOOD began in 1934, when Don Landry opened his first restaurant and bar in downtown Lafayette with $400 borrowed from his uncle. Four generations later, the Landry family has expanded that humble beginning into what would eventually become the DON'S SEAFOOD of today. Continuing the tradition, the Landry family still owns and operates each location. An extensive menu of original South Louisiana Cajun family recipes, the freshest Gulf seafood and sizzling steaks is offered. Each location boasts a unique Acadiana-inspired décor, all have a full-service bar and grill, perfect for casual diners or sports enthusiasts. Don's was a nice place to eat. Lucky for us, we arrived about 5pm for dinner and was seated immediately. When we left, the place was packed and people waiting outside. We were seated in one of the few booths near the bar. Very comfortable and our waiter was attentive, but not a nuisance. The food was good, but typical of modern day eateries trying to capitalize on the Cajun flavor. I had the fried Shrimp and Catfish. The shrimp were small and the catfish was cut into strips instead of a filet to make the amount appear larger. The shrimp and fish stacked on a bed of french fries of the frozen variety also add to the illusion of portions larger than actual. The small cup of slaw was very good and two hush puppies were average. The beer was cold.

We ate here for Sunday brunch yesterday while touring nearby Houmas House. I got the red beans & rice with hot sausage and my husband got a fried chicken sandwich. We both really enjoyed our food! The corn muffins were delicious, as was the homemade remoulade salad dressing. Yum! Sometimes you get very bland red beans & rice in restaurants but the Cabin's was full of flavor. Very nice portions too. Our waitress was super sweet and very attentive even though she had several tables which included big parties. Definitely want to come back and try some more dishes here! Very interesting place to eat.
