Stopped by for a cold ice cream on a hot day. Ice cream is great with lots of offbeat flavors like Salted Carmel bananas foster, and Cheesecake caramel cookie monster crunch. Highly recommended. Go soon, as they are retiring and it may not be there long.

Food in this little place is just great. Varied menu options with excellent presentation and preparation. Extra fresh and tasty. Restaurant is a little loud when full and the wait staff seems a bit less enthusiastic than possible, but after a long day that happens at the best of places. Food makes up for distractions.

We didn't take food along on our ride, other than crackers and a water bottle, so we were hungry when we finished our ride. This was the perfect place. We sat outside after we placed our order inside. Staff was very accommodating and friendly. Food...MoreThank you for the kind words. I hope you come again soon. James

The servers here are young and quickly overwhelmed. It took forever for us to get to place our order. Then another server appeared with food for two tables piled on one tray and haphazardly starts calling out dish names trying to match them with diners.
The green beans were from a can and the fish sandwich was two grocery store fish sticks on stale bread.
Skip this place.

Restaurant overlooks waterfall in 100+ year old renovated grist mill. Three outdoor decks overlooking 203 foot wide waterfall, Mocks Mill Falls. Small pub with large draft beer selection, local country fruit wines, and traditional wines. Selection includes from several local craft breweries and local wineries. Mixed media art from Appalachian Trail thru hikers.
Our host and waiter was just delightful. Happy to see us, very friendly, escorted us to a table by the waterfall with a fabulous view. He took our order - we both asked for the special, salmon with dirty rice and spinach. We started with a Caesar salad. Isn't Caesar salad supposed to have Romaine lettuce? Yes, but this one didn't. Not one rib. Caesar salad should never be made with yellow mustard, right? This one was. Okay, so it wasn't a real Caesar. The lettuce was fresh and crisp and the flavor was good. It was a very tasty, crisp green salad. No harm, no foul. Dinner arrived. Dirty rice? Nope, potatoes. Spinach? No again, mixed vegetables. I asked the waiter, and he said, "Is that what's on the special?" He looked at our menu and agreed. He said, "The chef doesn't remember what he put on there since he wrote it last week." I said, he could have looked at it. "Oh, no, he don't keep one for himself." Well, if the waiter doesn't know what comes with the special salmon, why should the chef? Notwithstanding the menu substitutions, it was all delicious. And, the waiter was so pleasant and entertaining, we actually enjoyed the evening. Top it off with the chef bringing us each an order of dirty rice and spinach with his apology. He sat down while we ate our extras and we had a very nice conversation. All in all, a fun and different kind of dining experience. And quite enjoyable.

This is the second time I have done the creeper trail. The first time was about 14 years ago and I did the route going from Abingdon to Damascus and back with my son.
Today I decided to go from Damascus up to Whitetop, Virginia. Strava and map my fitness showed that I did a round-trip of 39.5 miles.
Great fun. The first half was uphill and was arduous with wonderful views along the way of the creek and various markers that were informative. I had to take a great many pictures.
Coming back was very fast. It is a well-kept trail that is excellent for mountain bikes but I would not suggest using a road bike has the skinny tires might sink into various areas that have just dirt.
I would suggest at least 2 L to bring with you of water and a small first aid kit just in case. There is a small hand pump for water at white top and the water is very good.

Subway is a place where you can create a sandwich to your liking. I personally like the Meatball and the Philly Cheesesteak. But whatever is your choice it is made your way.

We visited Damascus because we did not want to pay $400 a night for a Super 8 Motel in Bristol to go to the Battle AT Bristol where University of Tennessee defeated Virginia Tech at Bristol Motor Speedway. We stayed at The Rivers Edge and walked to Cowboys for a great cup of coffee and a cold Chicken Biscuit. Coffee was good but the biscuit was frozen and reheated breaded chicken with very little chicken. BUT, the staff are TOP NOTCH and very friendly, so we stopped the next day on our way out of town and back to Knoxville, TN to get another cup of coffee. They do have other lunch and breakfast made to order items, a dinning area with booths and a nice flat screen TV and restrooms.

Food Truck cooking up BBQ and southern goodies.
We set up at different locations but frequent the Damascus Brewery.
Our home base is Abingdon, VA
We stopped at Damascus Brewery and this gem of a food truck was set up outside and we were not super hungry but decided to try their Ooey Gooey Butter Cake. I have no idea what it is, it is a mix between the most butter rich cake and a cheesecake, but it is so good, I am wishing I had another piece right now. If they shipped I would get a whole one shipped, lol. They were so friendly and super fast. the BBQ smelt delicious.
