Cobh (/ˈkoʊv/ KOHV, Irish: An Cóbh), known from 1849 until 1920 as Queenstown, is a tourist seaport town on the south coast of County Cork, Ireland. Cobh is on the south side of Great Island in Cork Harbour and is home to Ireland's only dedicated cruise terminal. Tourism in the area draws on the maritime and emigration legacy of the town - including its association with the RMS Titanic, which was built in Belfast.

I've recently visited Gilbert's for a lunch appointment with friends. I have to say the friendly smile as you walk in the door from the staff is the best possible start. Couldn't fault the decor or background music either. Extremely clean also. As for the food I couldn't fault in any manner. The portion size, the taste and the plate up was top class. Honestly the 'Spike Island' burger is a must and should definitely be tried. Definitely be making another visit to this restaurant when I return to Cobh.

Jacobs Ladder Restaurant at the WatersEdge Hotel is a bistro style venue that serves lunch from 12 - 5pm daily and evening meals from 5pm - 9pm daily. Early Bird menus are also available from 5pm - 7pm*Jacobs Ladder also features a large balcony overlooking the breath-taking scenery of Cobh Harbour. During the summer months the cruise liners also draw into Cobh adjacent to the hotel, where you can enjoy unrivaled views of these ships coming in to berth. Family events such as Communions, Confirmations, Christenings, Weddings and Civil Ceremonies can also be catered for in Jacobs Ladder. Service times are subject to change from season to season.
Delicious food and drink presented with such care. They easily catered for a gluten free diet, happily adapting a dish. Friendly service. Delightful views over the water. A stylish and popular venue with local people and it is not hard to see why. If visiting Cobh by train, it is just outside the train station, on the waters edge.

We were in Cobh for the weekend and booked Trade Winds for dinner on Saturday night. When booking I requested a table overlooking the harbour and we weren't disappointed.
The restaurant is upstairs and we got a window seat. It's a lovely space with a relaxed atmosphere. The Christmas decorations were up which added to the ambiance.
The food was great. We shared a calamari starter, steak and prawns for mains and we shared the bread and butter pudding. House white wine is good.
The service was excellent and very friendly! This restaurant ticks all the boxes.
So much so that we tried to book for the next night but unfortunately they close at 6 on Sunday. Will definitely call the next time we're in Cobh.

Let me begin by saying that the Tung Sing's food is not the problem here. Usually it's pretty great, though perhaps a little overpriced. My boyfriend LOVES their chicken curry and ribs and I've been known to eat enough of their special chow mein as would render me practically comatose for a good half hour afterwards. Also, their chocolate fudge cake? TO. DIE. FOR. Secondly, this is not a criticism of the restaurant space itself. It's adequately sized with pleasant views over Blarney and a nice atmosphere-particularly later in the evenings when they dim the lights and light the candles.
Unfortunately, the staff are not the most friendly. One of the waitresses-who is Asian-has never once smiled at us, despite us having been there several times. She is quite short in answering any questions about the dishes and, at one point, when asked if we could do half fried rice and half chips as a side, she flat out said no. No sense of being apologetic. This in addition to the fact that most other restaurants will be happy to accommodate little requests such as these.
A couple of times, when we've requested a window table, we've been met with the same sort of attitude from other staff members. There's never been any sense of compromise, it's more so a case of "No, suck it up". At one point, we were told that they COULDN'T reserve that particular table in advance. Despite the fact that, on the previous occasion, it was available because it had already been reserved. Weird...
Additionally, there's a particular member of staff (a teenage girl, by the sounds of it) who, almost always, when they are busy or when it is near to closing time, will answer the phone and pretend that there's a problem with the line. Want to enquire about a table on Valentine's night? Expect to hear "Hello Tung Sing Blarney!" followed by her interrupting you with "Hello Tung Sing Blarney?" several times as you try in vain to get a word in. You may argue that there may genuinely be a problem with the connection but, as I said, it seems to be the case any time they're a bit hectic or the few times we've called just prior to last orders (I get that they'd like to get out of there by 11pm but, even so, they could learn a thing or two from the Golden Panda, who have frequently taken orders ten minutes before closing). One evening, I called JUST after 10.30 (last orders) and spoke to an Irish woman. Despite having a very simple order, she too was adamant that they were done taking orders for the evening.
Finally, we've had multiple instances whereby they've gotten the take-out order wrong. We once got the special chow mein without the omlette (that's precisely what makes it special!) and were given the sauce in a trickle on top despite specifically asking for it in a separate tub. When we pointed this out a couple of days later, they offered a pretty insincere apology.
The food is amazing but, personally, for a warmer, more welcoming atmosphere, I'd look elsewhere.
