Where to Eat in Belem: The Best Restaurants and Bars

March 22, 2018 Madelene Haan

Just four miles from the center of Lisbon, Belem (or Santa Maria de Belem) is best known for Belem Tower (or Torre), a 16th-century fortified lighthouse built to guard the port. This was, after all, the port from which famous Portuguese navigators like Vasco de Gama set off to explore the world. The area is also home to Belem Palace, built in the 16th century by King Manuel and now the official residence of Portugal’s president. Belem is also home to the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery.

Come Prima Restaurante Italiano

Praise there is aplenty for Come Prima, one of Lisbons best-loved traditional Italian restaurants. Being a bit tucked away on Rua Olival, an easy walk from the romantic Tapada das Necessidades Gardens, is part of the restaurants considerable charm. A reassuringly cosy atmosphere, lovely lighting, wooden tables and chairs and friendly staff - Come Prima hits all the right notes. Expect wonderfully simple Italian classics - tomato soup to tiramisu - freshly prepared with skill and care. Some diners have said the pasta and pizza are the best theyve ever had. Whats certain is Come Prima hand-make their pasta fresh, and bake their pizzas to perfection in a wood-fired oven. Nice wine list, too. Ask for a table upstairs where its cosiest.

Very nice even if you come alone. Full house and at least three tables were solo/one only, which makes you feel normal in a restaurant in Portugal which are used to groups. Waiters are ok. Should care more about those alone making suggestions but overall they are very efficient. I went for the house speciality - the starter Funghi Ripieni not brilliant so choose something else, but the burrata & tartufo nero pizza was excellent ... be ready for a saucy pizza (the cheese is very “melty”). Wine by glass is not that good option. If you come by your self try porto Tonic instead or go for the beer. Kids love pizza but I would not recommend this restaurant.. They offered Limoncello at the end... Wow... makes a difference. #byHPink

Nannarella was a good surprise. The gelatos aren't expensive and they taste really good, with real flavors. There's usually a line, however, the employees are fast and eficiente. The upside is that they don't offer sitting spots. Some of the flavors are specific to some week days. The location is also very good, next to Assembleia da República (São Bento) and Príncipe Real

Landeau Chocolate

Reviewed By LuisMoreira - Lisbon, Portugal

Landeau Chocolate is a hip coffee shop in Lisbon offering two different locations one in LX Factory a startup business location located in the Alcantara district away from the city center and another shop right in the heart of the Chiado District off Rua do Alecrim. The decor is barn casual. The LX factory being furnished with vintage furniture offering casual Seating. The vibe there is definitely chocolate and if you are a chocolate lover this is most definitely a place to go. Their chocolate cake made of three different layers of chocolate cake cooked differently is one of the fluffiest texture that you can put in your mouth, melting away on your palate leaving a wonderful bittersweet taste, perfect blend against all those over sugary chocolate cakes you find elsewhere. Their coffee is also very good and different roast and blend from other places. They also offer a wide selection of home made blended tea. Most definitely worth visiting. Quality wise it is one of the best tea coffee shops in Lisbon, price wise is unfortunately on the expensive side closer to any store in Paris, Milan, London or Frankfurt.

Custard cream bakery. Portuguese custard tarts. Pasteis de Nata

Reviewed By Don P - Dallas, Texas, United States

You can order your tarts (Pasteis de Belem) and move deeper into the narrow store to eat them and watch them being made. They ring a bell outside the door whenever a fresh batch is ready from the oven. The tarts are very tasty when hot out of the oven. Sprinkle some cinnamon and powdered sugar on them like the natives. What is exceptional at this store is that you can watch every step of the making of the tarts through a glass window. These tarts have a thicker crust than those at the more famous Pasteis de Belem but are just as tasty.

Alecrim no Prato

Alecrim no Prato is a modern and cozy restaurant, located in one of the best areas of Lisbon. Serves Portuguese and Italian food.

Reviewed By Helen I - Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Our family ate lunch here, close to our apartment, and were so pleasantly surprised at the range of dishes in this simple restaurant. We all chose from the tapas/small plates selection and shared the food. I can recommend the grilled tuna which was perfectly cooked and nicely presented, sausage, batter fried asparagus and cod cakes. Each dish came out as soon as it was prepared, so the food was hot and crispy. We had turned down the cheese and meat platter that was brought to the table at first, although it did look good. Cold wine, friendly service and a patio table outside made this a meal to remember.
