We couldn't get Reservations for dinner so went for lunch the next day. Glad we rode bikes instead of walked because quite a distance from town. I can't say enough about the food. The meat pie was amazing. My kids loved the meatballs. The "cigars" were so good we ordered more. It was definitely the highlight of Balestrand.

The waiter told us just how long we would have to wait before they could take our order (I appreciated that). Sometimes the service is "down home" (they run out of things), but all the choices were delicious--fish soup, homestyle meatballs, traditional foods, and fresh fruit that was not spoiled by over-preparation (just simple whipped cream globbed on the top). We sat outside both times we ate and enjoyed the view and talking with the other diners.

Gekkens Restaurant is a family restaurant owned by a norwegian and married to a Filipina. The restaurant is celebrating their 25th year in service since 1989 Gekkens Restaurant always serving the traditional norwegian food at affordable prices. Homemade norwegian meatballs and norwegian salmon and norwegian beffsteak was the best seller, specially the local people and the tourist.
We arrived without a reservation and the staff struggled with communicating our options. They had difficulty understanding that we wanted to wait for a table and eventually offered us an outside garden table.
I had the fish set meal and it was lovely. The fish soup was superb...fresh goods, salmon pieces, hot, homemade. Salmon grilled to perfection. Boiled potatoes were wasted (over cooked)
Wife had the burger and it was made nicely and tasty
Free coffee and tea...nice touch.
Interior Seating tight but lovely. Garden tables outside were fine

Without doubt this was the best place we ate in Balestrand and one of the best on our tour of Norway. It's the name of the bar/ bistro in the Kviknes hotel. It's certainly not bar food, but a quality bistro. The cured salmon starter was delicious and lamb with sweetbreads made a perfect main course. We can also highly recommend the sea-trout. Given that the restaurant is part of the hotel and that this quality of food is not readily available in Balestrand (Ciderhuset was not open in early June so do not know how it compares), the bill was reasonable. Go for this place over the buffet and if you want a step or two up from the Pilgrim restaurant.

Kviknes Hotel dining room. Evening buffet and a la carte menu. Balholm Bar serves a la carte meals. Fully licensed. Well stocked wine cellar. International cuisine. Local ingredients used as far as possible.
Very famous and elegant old hotel that has been wonderfully preserved. Sits right on the harbor with outstanding views. Has an daily evening smorgasbord that is exceptional! Huge variety of foods, beautifully presented, elegant wait staff, gourmet experience. Pricey but well worth the price. Suggest you have Reservations. Afterwards have coffee out on the balcony overlooking the fjords/harbor which is included in the meal price. One of our best experiences in Scandinavia and would highly recommend to others if you like fine dining, great variety of food, and a wonderful experiece! Suggest you wear good travel clothes - not shorts.

Quirky, cozy atmosphere. Excellent food - fish, vegetables, meat - all prepared to a high quality, and very tasty. Menu is not extensive but good selection including for vegetarians and a tasty vegan soup. Four Italian wines by the bottle. About half the price of Kviknes hotel - a lovely option.

We were happy to stumble upon something a little different. Not only do they offer traditional German fare, they also serve up thin-crust pizzas and heaping bowls of two kinds of pasta. My husband and I shared the margherita pizza, pesto pasta and a bottle of Spanish red. Delicious and great service. And it didn't break the bank, as many of the Norwegian restaurants tend to do.
