This restaurant was picked by the travel agency that arranged our company outing. We ate at the Gerry Shan Picnic Bay branch, not the original branch, twice. The breeze was nice and while the place is the opposite of posh, the dishes were tasty. I especially liked the buttered shrimps and pako (fern) salad (unsure if part of the buffet or ordered ala carte for our group). The servers were pleasant although I noticed on both times that they failed to leave serving spoons and forks and I had to ask for such - do they actually think it is hygienic to pick up food from the serving plates (since we didn't partake of the buffet table) with the utensils you are using?!?! I know Baler isn't a cosmopolitan/sophisticated place and this is an extremely "casual "place but still... nevertheless, it was a good experience and can't believe how cheap it is.

Place very packed. Get ready to wait. Food not bad. Typical Filipino dishes. Costs about 200 per pax. Funny thing is they don't have a waiting list. I asked the server how will they know we're next to be seated when other parties come... she said I will just remember your face. So don't take your eyes off the nest available table or someone might just sneak in on you.

They offered a buffet worth 200 pesos known as a hungry surfer meal. But choices are very limited and doesn't taste good at all . The deal include 5 viands , with fruits as dessert , and drink choices are either iced tea and orange juice. Go with Gerry Shan instead on the next visit if you're in Baler.

Similar to other where-to-eat-in-Baler, best shared by group for servings good for 2-3 persons around PhP 160 (~USD 5) per serving. My group tried Kare-Kare, Laing and grilled fish, all thumbs up they say. I get Pancit Bihon and still fine late night dish. We went there around 10pm and glad they're still open. Others say try, Halo-Halo but would inappropriate during my visit :)

A must to go place if you wanna relax with friends, be who you are and be loud as you want. A place where they welcome with open arms. The owners are friendly and amazing!!! And they are the only place in Baler that serves ice cold beers!!! And the swedish meatballs are to die for.. Love this place!!!

After eating her a couple of times, I find that this place is overrated. The portioning is too small for the price and the taste was just on the average. The main attraction here is really the Volkswagen and the vibe of the place. Serving time also takes a while. The best time for eating here is 6PM before the place gets really full.

Pure luck that the cafe beside Aling Aveng (or Aling Abeng?) is closed so we tried this place out.
We had the food for takeaway so we could bring it to Dinadiawan and they were nice enough to pack everything in boxes complete with the sauces for dipping. We had grilled pork belly, grilled fish (blue marlin, I believe), buttered garlic shrimp, stuffed squid, and pako salad. Everything was SO GOOD even after 2 hours of travel.
We went back the following day for lunch (AGAIN) because it was that good. We had crabs in garlic butter sauce (full of roe and so fresh!), bulalo, stuffed squid, pako salad (our favorite and topped generously with itlog na pula), grilled pork belly, and grilled fish. You could tell they only use the freshest ingredients because everything was sweet and tasty. The pork was tender and delicious, the crab was sweet, and even the bulalo was fall-off the bone tender that I'm still dreaming about their food until now. They also graciously refilled the bulalo soup when we asked!
Service was great, food's delicious and fresh, great price point (paid around 2K for that spread) and the place is quite clean! They have value meals for those with a tight budget but if you feel like treating yourself a bit, have the prawns and crab cooked for you and don't forget to get the grilled meat and fish! You won't regret it.

Since we arrived around 4pm, we just ordered Beef Shawarma for late merienda. The Shack's beef shawarma is simple, tasty and filling. I love how there was no dripping oil like the usual shawarma being served here in the Philippines. Beef was tender, not dry, and the best part is it's not swimming in oil. Sauce is not overpowering, and complements the beef. Pita bread is also the right thickness. I was told that the owners are very particular with their ingredients, they even import their spices from India. Would love to try their curry and other authentic Goan dishes next.
