Where to Eat in Astoria: The Best Restaurants and Bars

April 14, 2018 Alida England

Historic Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains, first established as a fur trading post before it expanded to become the bustling port city it is today. Its storied past is documented in numerous museums, from the Columbia River Maritime Museum with its collection of nautical relics to the Uppertown Firefighters Museum, whose collections of firefighting memorabilia is complimented by the interactive Children's Museum on the second floor.

Bowpicker Fish & Chips

**Cash only, no cards.

Delicious fish and chips in downtown Astoria right off of Marine Drive. There’s no seating, food is to go. Enjoyed lightly beer batter albacore fish and chips that were simply amazing. Chips are thick steak type fries. Vinegar, tartar and other sauces are offered as well as limited beverages.

Place is only open a few days a week, Wed-Sat at 11 until they run out of fish, but people are often lined up, outdoors, in the rain, patiently waiting…so arriving at 11ish is wise. Food is made to order, so prepare to wait depending on the line.

Parking is also limited, you’ll be fortunate to get a spot on the street close by. There is a coast guard alert parking lot below the shack, but it’s illegal to park there and towing is strongly enforced. Many risk it, but do so at their own risk.

A great place to stop for lunch if passing through town.

Unexpected surprise in downtown Astoria! At the suggestion of our server, we shared a platter of lamb and cabbage rolls. It was beautifully presented and delicious! They also had several regional wines from Bosnia, Croatia, etc. We finished off with the baklava and Sarajevo coffee, both of which were very good. Service was prompt and friendly. A wonderful change of pace from the usual fare.

The food and service were good and the piano player was terrific. We chose this place because it was walking distance from the hotel where we were staying (The Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa) and were happy with our choice. The menu is a little...MoreWe're glad you enjoyed your meal, and the music! We think that the one enhances the other, and we do love to support local musicians!

This is a generally nice place to have some good to very good food in a pleasant setting. We had fire-roasted tomato pasta ($13), which had a very good pesto sauce, as well as a spinach and strawberry salad ($10.50), which was OK with an excellent honey-mustard dressing, but lacked the almonds that were listed as an ingredient! But for dessert we had a fantastic, unusual “choco loco” quesadilla, with chocolate, ice cream, toffee, caramel, and whipped cream ($7)! The service was OK, in general.

Came with a group of people to celebrate a birthday and everyone was pleased. While this is, I guess, primarily a brewery and specializes in beer selections, no one in our party had any beer, but their selection seemed great and something for every taste. The food was excellent. As the title of this review states though, be sure to try the cheese curds, they are without doubt the best I've ever had. For my entree I had the daily pasta selection which this day was chicken and veggie fettuccini and it was very good, and very generous portion. The others in the group had sandwiches or fish and chips and all were quite pleased. Don't think you can go wrong for a meal here.
Our server was Kaitlyn and she was just like the food: top notch. Very attentive and efficient and a pleasing personality to boot.
Great restaurant!!!!

Came on the recommendation of our host. They also have another site around the corner, more high end.
The dinner selection was ample and the shrimp fettuccine impressed the cook of our house. Quarters are intimate. It was around 6pm the musician came in to play the dulcimer. Very unobtrusive, Such beautiful pieces. Really soothing for dinner. Cost was $38 for two. Definitely go again.

We went with several couples at lunchtime. Our orders varied a from Turkey sandwich to clam chowder to cheese bread to salmon and halibut. We had several desserts as well, but the entire dessert tray looked fabulous. Everyone thought their food was delicious! Service was prompt and really friendly. An additional unusual highlight are the framed winners of previous yearly crayon contest winners, which show amazingly talented artists. This was a great place to eat!

There’s always something new to try from the brewery’s rotating taps, including taster trays, pints, and growlers-to-go. The lively public house offers family-friendly dining with made-from-scratch meals using organic, natural, and local ingredients. An upstairs Woodfired Pizza venue was opened in the Summer of '13 and operates all day on Saturdays and Sundays, from 4:30-10pm on Wednesdays-Fridays and is closed Monday and Tuesday. Beautiful views and woodwork. Tours of the 30 barrel production brewery and beer canning line are available Saturdays and Sundays at 1pm and 4pm. Located on the site of the original 1811 settlement of Astoria, the locals lining the bar can get you up to speed on the city’s past, present, and future.

Went for dinner with my son. Only four other tables, so they weren't busy. He ordered a Captain's Plate and the waiter brought a hamburger. He took the burger back, returned and told us he accidentally dropped the Captains Plate. Not believable as the restaurant was so quiet, I'm sure we could've heard a plate hit the floor. My oysters were okay, lukewarm as were the fries. The menu said the fries were seasoned, they weren't, just standard food service crinkle fries. The waiter said he'd take half off the price of my son's meal; he took 30% off, probably all he had the authority to take. If he'd been honest, he would've gotten more than a token tip. We won't be back.
