Museum of cafeteria style attached to Abashiri prison. The popular menu is "Prison meal" which reproduces the meal provided to the inmate at the actual Abashiri prison In the busy season of summer, "Prison Food" is offered even within the building's important cultural property, the former Abashiri Prison facility.
Right outside of Abashiri Kangoku (Prison) Museum is this Kangoku Shokudou (Prison Restaurant), open to everyone. Since this is technically outside the museum complex, you don't have to purchase an admission ticket to eat at this restaurant for lunch.
Yes, the restaurant is open only for lunch. Make sure to go in and order your meal before 2:30 p.m., otherwise you will not be served. I'd suggest to visit the museum complex before 10:00 a.m. and have lunch at this restaurant later. They say the restaurant could be quite crowded in the summer after noon.
The restaurant has a regular range of lunch meals common to any Japanese restaurant, PLUS two current Abashiri Prison (real and active one in Abashiri) lunch menu offered as Lunch A and Lunch B. The former comes with a Pacific saury (sanma) and the latter comes with one side of an Okhotsk atka mackerel (hokke). The bowl full of rice is 70% rice and 30% pressed barley. Both are served with miso-soup, but in a real prison lunch it's only a cup of tea. They are reasonably tasty so you should try it to feel to be an inmate at Abashiri Prison.

Stopped by for lunch with tour group. Seafood hot pot is OK. Hot pot has one crab, mainly for flavor as it didn't have much meat. Shrimp ball was the best. Misc fish and veggies were OK.
Tour added whale sashimi but we didn't eat it. Others who did said it was more like rubber and resorted to cooking it in the hot pot.
Overall OK for a quick meal. Nothing special.

I came here 3 times and the cuts kept getting bigger. The owner has an app to translate and it makes you feel right at home. And every Japanese person I say next to was willing to try and figure out a conversation. After telling the owner that sushi is my favorite food, he gave me the biggest cuts of salmon I could ever imagine. My entire mouth was full from one nigiri and it was delicious. Please go here and experience the magic

After driving a distance from Mombetsu to Abashiri, Tsuki is a good place for a stop for lunch or so and the food is of good quality. There is a car park outside the restaurant so it's convenient for car travellers. The picture menu is user-friendly for tourists who don't know Japanese. The sushi is fresh and tasty. Besides sushi, other hot dishes are also quite good such as steak.

A drive through the country roads reminded me of the familiar tune, "Country Roads," played often at Munich's Oktoberfest bands. The changing colors of the leaves are appreciated as we drive through Forests and tunnels of the mountainous terrain.
We arrive in front of a what looks like a farmhouse resto. There are no commercial businesses nearby. It is isolated and not fancy. Inside it reminds me of the inside of a barn with a very high ceiling, one large space, and a faded, rustic look. Ceramics are offered for sale along the side.
The mom and pop resto has the mom running the front and the pop cooking. We sit at the only table with chairs; the other seats are on tatami mats with no leg wells. It is fully booked with an eclectic group of soba afficionados.
The menu is limited. Besides hot or cold soba there are sides of shrimp and vegetable tempura. We have matcha. The cost is reasonable at 1800Y for two.
We all liked the uniqueness of this resto.

my purpose was "doro ramen"
Altough it was tasted chemical seasoning,it was amazing ramen.
your body will be hot!
It was rich soup of the soy sauce
and tonkotu.
noodle was made from Hokkaido.
If you have first ramen in Hokkaido,
i will not recommend.
But i will recommend this ramen if you eat only normal miso ramen.
