What a great surprise. Â Gasthof Muhle is tucked away in Aesch near Basel. Â It is a Michelin recommended restaurant for 2012 and well deserving of the recognition. Â My wife, son and I went there for Mother's day. Â We were greeted by friendly waiters in black and white uniform in a restaurant split by a remarkable wine display case and fresh flowers on every table. Â As our Swiss German is horrible, we were served by the manager, Jean-Daniel Moix, who is fluent in Swiss-German, French, and English. Â We learned that Mr. Moix spent eight years abroad as a chef, was a chef at this restaurant (evident by a painting of him in chef attire on the wall of the restaurant) and now is the restaurant manger for the last 3 years. Â The food was the best meal I have had so far in Basel. Â We start with a complementary taster of a wine/mushroom terrine with fresh cheese and potato salad. Â My starter was a delicious mini puff pastry with fresh asparagus, garnished with pesto, alfelfa sprouts and parsley. Â My main was outstanding...A duo of perfectly grilled beef in red wine sauce and veal in a morels mushroom sauce. It came with crispy dauphinois potatos and fresh assorted vegetables. Â For dessert, we had homemade rhubarbs sorbet with fresh strawberries in a yummy sabayon cream sauce. Â For digestifs, they role out a nice cart of whiskey, cognac, and port for selection. Â For 3 courses it was only 58chf, very reasonable for Swiss standards.All in all,no boring Swiss food here, just great dishes full of flavor and tasty delights. Â It is a local treasure and a must visit for expat foreigners like myself who appreciate great tastes.

It's very busy. Apart from having to share a table in order to get a seat we had a fabulous meal here. Chose set maze for 2 with meats @66CHF, it could easily have fed four. All around us people were taking doggie bags home. Service very good, food very good, price on a par for this country, over £100 including wine.Thank you for your evaluation :) There is always a lot going on in Za Zaa Petersgraben, so we recommend to book in advance. Came here for breakfast/brunch on a Saturday morning with our 2 little girls. Buffet type. You pay according to the weight of your plate (43chf/kilo). Itâs not cheap. But itâs Switzerland. We were a bit surprised by the âlackâ of variety on offer to be honest... a lot of savoury, salads, vegetarian dishes, breads, etc which is fine and everything we tasted was quite tasty. But it was lacking sweets and the usual foods you would expect at a European breakfast/brunch - ie. eggs. And you have to pay more (of course) for any sweet pastries.... This aside, everything is fresh, tasty, and itâs worth a try!Cute little kids area - a few toys, books and colouring pencils.

So nice to be at a Swiss restaurant that also provides nice and very friendly service. Coming from America I always feel that service is lacking in Swiss restaurants. Not here, service was great. Big points.Was also nice to see some other draft beers behind the typical Swiss or German beers which all taste the same. So big points for that.Unfortunately food was ok, nothing special. We booked here from the UK having read the FB reviews as we were in Basel on holiday, my wife's a veggie and it was her birthday.Having read it was a little tricky to find, we took a picture of the building with us which helped. They have put up little yellow arrows to get you heading in the right direction once you've found the building.We were a group of seven and all of us each enjoyed the meal very much. That's both veggies and meat eaters.Setting being in the old brewery was a little industrial but that along with excellent service added to the charm.They also made a bit of a fuss for the birthday girl with a large indoor firework style candle.Mains should have been accompanied by soup or salad. These weren't offered but to be fair we didn't ask for them.If it wasn't thousands of miles away we'd be back but if in Basel again we definitely will be.Swiss food is far from cheap especially here but worth it.Oh it's also wheelchair accessible with a disabled loo too.Thank you very very much for your lovely review. Had a really great night out with the family at Hattoriâs. While the overall atmosphere was soso, the food was incredible. Main courses we would definitely recommend to try: octopus, seafood platter, and the duck. Really well done - teppanyaki style and cooked directly in front of you.
