Tarapoto is a commercial hub town in the San Martín Province of the San Martín Region or northern Peru. It is an hour by plane from Lima, in the high jungle plateau to the east of what is known as the selva baja (low jungle). Although Moyobamba is the capital of the region, Tarapoto is the region's largest city and is linked to the Upper Amazon and the historic city of Yurimaguas by a relatively well-maintained transandean highway, paved in 2008-9.

The potato and the superb salad fall on their knees to the King Cut of Beef in Tarapoto! The owner grills the meat to perfection and explains why simple is better! If you are overwhelmed by Peruvian food (or not), make a break and eat a fine cut!

Nice little restaurant, a surprise, really, to find this in the neighborhood. They specialize in pizza, pasta, and grilled food. I have only had their pizza a couple of times, and have very much enjoyed it.The restaurant is open to the street, but since it is only open at night, and it is below street level, the noise is not too bad. It is a nicer decor than many neighborhood restaurants. The TV tends to dominate the room, though. Chairs are remarkably uncomfortable, for some reason. Pizza crust is a bit unusual in that it is a raised crust like a cracker, but the flavors and ingredients are good. I enjoyed the jungle varieties and tropical fruit varieties, like Hawaiian with ham, peaches and pineapple, or the smoked meats of the area.Service is ok, there is only one person taking orders and presenting food, but he is usually not too busy. They do not serve beer, but do make up Sangria and cocktails.

This restaurant is a little hard to find, as it is set back in a courtyard off the street, but it is only half a block from the main square, and across from Radio shack. Once you find the sandwich board by the door, it opens up into a very roomy space. I have eaten there twice. They have fixed price lunch specials for 12 soles ($4), 2 courses and a drink. Most of it is grilled food, which is their specialty. I had a stuffed avocado ("palta"), which was stuffed with a salad of potatoes, carrots, peas and onions with a lime dressing. Was delicious. Watch out for the yellow dressing on the side, it is NOT mustard! Muy Picante! For the mail course, I had the Fish in a Leaf which is a specialty of the jungle here. The fish is wrapped in a Bijal leaf and steamed until the meat is moist and tender, and the skin becomes almost gelatinous. The cavity of the fish was stuffed with minced onion and cilantro, which flavor permeated the entire fish. Then, they took the fish out and grilled it on the coals to give it a smoky flavor. This was definitely the best tilapia I have ever eaten! The accompanying white rice and boiled manioc/cassava/yuca were not exciting. The aji pepper sauce did liven it up a bit.

We went there for dinner. Nice place, beautifully arranged terrace with plants and rustic tables and chairs. Food is good, cocona-sour as well. It is a mix between 'fast-food and typical local food'. There are pizzas too. The salad is very good, this is the only vegetarian meal, together with Tequeños - kind of fried cheese sticks with Guacamole. The only 'negative' point is that Rustica is surrounded by main streets - the air is not really fresh up on the terrace and the noises of the Motokars and cars can be loud and annoying. Prices ok, medium range.
