Great find, whilst looking for a fish & chip restaurant. Takeaway with small seating area with good ambience and lovely helpful & friendly staff. Disappointed there was no plaice on the menu. There is a catch of the day and gluten-free and non-fish options. Quite different menu, with interesting sides and tried coleslaw with parmesan, cauliflower popcorn, smoked salmon fishcake, all delicious. Kids eat free 4-6pm Mon-Fri was an added bonus. Parking on street in parking bays.

El Toro is one of those restaurants that often people recommend in Portsmouth and I was surprised I hadn't been sooner myself. I love myself a steak dinner and its my 'go to' meal if we are out and treating ourselves to a 'nice' meal. I booked a table online because I was conscious of the fact so many people had been, I didn't want to turn up on the evening and find they couldn't seat us, especially as it was for my boyfriend's birthday- Turns out it was quite quiet and a booking wasn't really necessary but glad I took the precaution nonetheless. We were welcomed warmly and taken to a table that wasn't so warm. I could feel the air con right on us so decided to leave my jacket on but it didn't bother me too much. Myself and my boyfriend both order an 8oz Sirloin steak with steak cut chips cooked medium rare. Our meals came out really quickly which was great as I was really looking forward to it because of all the recommendations. I don't want to say I was disappointed because the food tasted lovely, cooked to our requirements and couldn't fault it but couldn't help but have the feeling of ' I've had better' . Maybe I should have chosen a different cut of meat? I can't put my finger on it , I just wasn't overwhelmed by my meal, the chips were really good and I really enjoyed my cocktail. I chose sticky toffee pudding as a desert which was truly delicious and my boyfriend had the cheesecake ( the waitress had to find out the flavour which was being served that day which was a little surprising as expected her to know but thought she may be new?) I believe the flavour was caramel and pear which he enjoyed very much.I would like to come back and experience something else as I know they often have different offers and deals on at different times and would like to return to give it another review. After three years of eating in Portsmouth, are last visit and we finally find a fantastic place , the steaks were cooked to perfection, the service was spot on , the restaurant was clean ,comfortable and very welcoming, definitely worth a visit.
