This is a traditional pub with a sizable dining area, and with all the trappings you’d expect. What we did not expect is the level of attention paid to the food. There were several delicious entrees on our table, and dessert is a must here. Kudos to the kitchen staff for an excellent duck and the best fish and chips I had in Ireland.Thank you for taking the time to write a review here on TripAdvisorYour kind words are warmly received by all of the team here at the McSweeney Arms. I shall pass on your comments to our dedicated Kitchen team.It was our absolute pleasure. We would love to welcome you in the future.

I want to preface this review by noting this is a beautiful restaurant, our meals were delicious and the server we had was pretty good (inexpereinced but pleasant). The reason for the 1 star review is down to another server also working that night who made the whole experience VERY disappointing, and who in my opinion is a disgrace to her profession and this establishment. Our party of 4 attended for an early evening dinner on Sunday September 22nd and were seated immediately in the dining area where there were only 2 other tables with diners. We ordered drinks and an appetizer to get us started while we perused the menu. When our server dropped the drinks at the table I asked for a glass of ice. Our appetizer was delivered to the table by another server covering this same section of the restaurant - since we were not yet given sharing plates (or the ice) we asked her if we could get both. She was clearly agitated and rudely walked away from us while we were still asking ....however, she had clearly heard us since she delivered both a few moments later. I'm unclear if her frustration was because she had to do a little work for a table that wasn't hers or whether there was some friction between her and the other server. Either way, the customer should never be on the receiving end of such frustrations. A short while later we were in need of drinks again and the server who had previously been dismissive passed by our table several times without acknowledging us, even though it was clear we were trying to get her attention. My husband politely asked her if we could order from her, she briskly walked by as though she didn't hear him, then responded "did you ask me something" on her way back again. When he asked if we could order some drinks she told him "we would just have to wait a minute". The next time she walked by she still did not take our order but instead told us she would get our server. It was her over all attitude I found most distasteful and this whole experience made for a very unpleasant evening as she continued to walk by our table for the rest of the evening completely avoiding any eye contact. Our party of 4 have a combination of 50 years experience in the hospitality industry and arepas tolerant than most guests might be, but I know from experience this level of service fell way below par! I appreciate Killarney is a tourist town (we also were tourists) but based on our visit I would caution other diners and recommend trying one of the many other eating establishments in the area.

We ate here one night during our stay. Surprised that the restaurant was fairly quiet which detracted a little from the ambiance but we did enjoy a very good meal, the beef in particular was heavenly. Great service from our French waitress Sophie and nice to have the meal accompanied by a piano player. Felt the sommelier wasn't that interested.

27th October 2019.Party of 2. Table 18.30. Welcomed by Stephen & team. Seated lovely corner table. Wonderful young ladies Sharon and colleagues came and took our drink and food orders.Extensive menu. Time to drool and ponder. For the avid fish lover then Quinlans The Mad Monk is definitely the place to dine. I would strongly advise booking. As a busy, buzzy spot. Decor tastefully done. Copious seating both up and downstairs. Child friendly too.I opted for Scallops as my starter. The best I have tasted in a very long time.My darling opted for Thai Fish cakes, a good balance of potato and fish. Dermot and I chose the Proper Scampi. It matched up to its description. Exquisite. The Mad Monk is the best fish restaurant in Killarney. Such an asset too. Cannot wait to return again. Beautiful premises. Excellent team. Location perfect.Book first. Enjoy. Bravo. Newly opened since August Bank holiday weekend 2019. Steak available for non fish lovers. But try something new. Thank you.
