We read on earlier reviews that you should not be put off by the exterior of this typical French bar/cafe/restaurant. That is right. We ate there this week and the food and service were first class. The patron was extremely welcoming and the waitress could not have been more helpful. Like all local bars the TV was on in the background, but as Saracens Rugby were beating Paris in the European Cup Final I could not complain. Although not many of the locals seemed to be enjoying it as much as me.We had steaks cooked on the open log fire, but the best dish was the lamb shanks, all served with the local speciality of white haricot beans cooked in duck fat. Excellent.Highly recommended for a local restaurant.

We drove through Segonzac on our way to somewhere else and stopped for lunch. Sitting in the car park we observed what deems to be 'droves' of people heading towards a fairly ordinary looking bar/restaurant. It's always a good sign so we followed them. This restaurant is what I think is a perfect example of the French love of good food. It looked like most people worked nearby - we were the only English people. There must have been 50 people for lunch: in the restaurant, garden and private room. The service was charming and helpful and there was a big board displaying probably about 20 lunch options. The chef and his team are a marvel. This is not 'gourmet' food as such but the best type of typical honest French provincial restaurant catering to the local trade. In any other country it would be gourmet. We loved it so much we went out of our way to return the next day. Everything about it was charming and delicious.

restaurant traditionnel français, travaillant des produits frais locaux (viandes, poissons et boissons). Ambassadeur du cognac, profitez d'un large choix du Nectar de notre belle ville sur notre agréable terrasse.
Even though it was a Saturday it also happened to be a public holiday, so everything, shops included was shut lunchtime. Options were limited. A troublesome encounter at a tourist café meant we were very stuck for ideas but Tripadvisor suggested the Astoria. And what a great little find it was. To look at from the outside it looks a bit like a pub, but as it was open we settled for a table outside. The staff were extremely friendly and helped with all the allergens, the food only helped to defy the initial look of the place. As others have mentioned the food was slightly hit and miss. The starters were exceptional, worthy of any restaurant, but the main dishes of confit duck were a touch heavy going, plentiful but needing a little more finesse. The desserts scored highly with the children. All in all deserving of custom, next time I would just choose different mains.
