The population in 2011 was 34,254, in an area of 95.41 km². The city itself (the parish Esposende, Marinhas e Gandra) had a population of 9,197 in 2001. It gained city status on 2 July 1993. The present Mayor is Fernando Couto Cepa, elected by the Social Democratic Party. The municipal holiday is August 19. It is located on the Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago.

Garden cafe/restaurant playing cool jazz and serving lovingly cooked, tastefully presented (and cheap) dishes - many smoked over the coals - with a selection of unique locally-sourced wines.They do a menu do dia through the week, and once my daughter and I found this place just down from our hotel (Axis Ofir) we ate nearly every meal here. A big bonus is that Thiago, the owner, and at least two of his waitresses speak excellent English. Found this place on a festival evening when most other places were closed. It's a restaurant and a take away which was very busy. Grilled meats seemed to be the speciality of the house. The restaurant was clean and the female member of staff was helpful, friendly and attentive. Food portions were big, we had the meat and cheese board, octopus and a decent bottle of wine, a very good meal indeed. Would recommend.
