The Great Northern aims to do the simple things well. We offer a carefully selected range of real ales, lagers, craft beers and spirits along with the odd cider combined with a great wine list. We serve Modern British food based on fresh, locally sourced
Really disappointing. I had a Sunday roast (beef), it was flavourless and unappetising. I donât believe that the food was prepared on the premises, it looked and tasted like food that was brought in and just heated up. For the prices charged, it was unacceptable. As someone who remembers the Northern as it used to be years ago, I think the re-furb has been done on the cheap and the toilets havenât been changed at all, I also have to say that one toilet had no toilet roll and the other was rather soiled Iâm guessing from the previous night.Sorry, you really need to up your game, I cannot recommend at all!Hi 602kaig,Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your meal on Sunday. The beef is locally sourced topside of beef. It is delivered fresh and roasted early Sunday morning with a pinch of salt. Nothing else. The meat is advertised and served rare, as it should be, we believe it speaks for itself. As well as the beef, the carrots, parsnips, broccoli, cauliflower and potatoes are again sourced locally and pre-cooked Sunday morning (parboiled, fried or confit in butter). These are finished to order. Even the yorkies are made to my mum's recipe. Nothing is bought in or from a packet. For the quality of ingredients and effort we put into our Sunday roasts, the cost is more than reasonable. In response to your comments on the refurbishment, a considerable amount was spent to install a brand new kitchen, relocating the bar and giving the garden a makeover (plus everything you don't see back of house). The toilets weren't changed a great deal because they were fit for purpose. When we took the freehold 5 years ago, the GN was on it's last legs, a dying pub. After 5 years of investment and a huge amount of effort, it is now going from strength to strength, to the extent of being awarded an Asset of Community Value order this year, amongst other accolades. It's a shame that none of your complaints were mentioned at the time, we would of gone out of our way to rectify and improve your time with us. All the best,Sheri

The Boot is rich in history being built around the time of The War of The Roses-The Battle of St Albans. It has beautiful old open timbers and low ceilings and specialises in excellent Real Ales. The pub has been a regular on the Good Beer Guide and has j
It is a few decades since I was last here but I decided to have a pint after a walk around Verulamium. One vast improvement, being over six foot, was that my head is no longer in a fug of smoke! Service was fast, polite and friendly. Although there appears to be a good selection of beers they also seem rather "samey". They are expensive too. I had a pint and a half of well kept beer. Some people were eating and the food looked good. Will probably come back and have a meal and a few pints at some stage.Toilets could do with a bit of a refresh!

Visited last night for the first time. The setting is lovely and staff very friendly but food was average - edible but nothing special. Wine arrived after the food. I had a lovely evening with friends but wonât be rushing back to eat as there are much better places in St Albans.

The Lower Red Lion is a prime example of a traditional English pub. We pride ourselves on the quality of our locally-sourced real ales (all of which come to us from a brewery within 35 miles of the pub). We take great care when sourcing the ingredients, c
Enjoyed a great Friday lunch at the Lower Red last week. The pork & chorizo burger was excellent. I can also strongly recommend the Sticky Toffee pudding. My family chose chicken and bacon sandwiches and no one was disappointed. Will definitely be back for more.

Dating back to the 16th Century, The Cock Inn remains one of the most popular pubs in St Albans. We are known for our great food, real ales and extensive wine list. In winter we have a roaring log fire whilst in summer we have a fantastic heated garden of
I was with a group of eight friends who dined at this pub a few days ago and we very much enjoyed the meal. The service was very good and we began with a number of pints of Tribute which was an excellent start. The menu is gastro pub which contained some unusual combinations of meat and vegetables but certainly when the food came it was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked.Seating is a bit cramped but there is no doubt that certainly on the evening we went, it was doing very good business. Despite having lived in St Albans for nearly forty years, I had never had a drink or a meal here, but would certainly come again.

Great friendly staff, in the middle of town. Menu is selective but they will happily cater around your needs. Went on Saturday lunchtime and place is busy. Lovely ales and wine list. Would love to go again. Had duck scotch egg, soup and fish for mains. Perfectly cooked. Thanks for such good service
