We are situated in the lovely village of Hemingfield, Barnsley, just off junction 36 on the M1, close to Rotherham and Barnsley. A family run business (10 of us all together!). We are a fully homemade establishment that caters for family meals, romantic d
My wife and I ate on Saturday evening with friends. Prawns with onion and garlic came with lots of onion and garlic and very few prawns and my belly pork was overcooked so that the meat was hard with two overcooked pieces of black pudding. Chicken supreme was a quarter of dry roasted chicken with potato, peas and broccoli with an overwhelming raw garlic taste. My understanding of chicken supreme is a creamy sauce with bacon but unfortunately there was nothing supreme about this dish. The sea bass consisted of two small skinless fillets pan fried (overcooked again) with potato and cabbage. The brownie should have been dense and gooey but was more like a chocolate sponge with hard edges.Overall very disappointed and very reluctant whilst with friends who were satisfied with their meals to complain as it would have spoiled the evening.Thank you for your feedback. We take on board all comments, both positive and negative, and always improve upon these. No issues were raise about any of the comments mentioned above to any member of staff therefore we were unable to rectify the said issues. If you would have let one of us know, we would have replaced your food and offered you another item as a gesture of goodwill however this was not possible in this situation.I am disappointed to hear that you didn't enjoy your starters and mains but I am really happy to hear that your friends enjoyed their meals. Our chocolate brownie is homemade to our own recipe and may differ from other forms of brownie you have eaten before however this is a method of cooking and does vary in different establishments. We hope to see you soon and give you a positive experience.Thank you.

We called for a midweek lunch with family members, and got exactly what we ordered. Food arrived promptly, hot and tasty, and was cooked to order. A relaxed atmosphere, ideal for us to talk and chat in. All very pleasant, staff polite and efficient. We will visit again.

Visited here on Monday dinner time with my partner, 3 kids and my parents. Eerily empty apart from 2 other tables who seem to have been sat in complete silence. Was seated at a large table by the waitress who was very pleasant. The waitress was the only positive aspect of our visit. We ordered a range of starters and meals from the lunchtime menu. After ordering, the starters and kids meals took an absolute age to materialise. I had prawn cocktail... hmm. I think this should be renamed iceberg lettuce cocktail as this made up the largest part of the dish. Dish also being the operative word here as it was served in literally a dish. A mound of iceberg, 4 pieces of cucumber, 2 wizened segments of tomato and a light smattering of the tiniest prawns I have ever seen completed the worst prawn cocktail I have ever had. There was no lemon or bread served with it either. Not a great start. Other starters were chicken goujons and fish goujons. Both of which looked identical and were equally crap. The batter was thick and inside was soggy to the point which my son couldnât eat them as they were slimy. Time for the mains. Well half an hour later. Steak pie was half a pie each and was drier than the wit of Bob Monkhouse. Served with massive soggy carrots and marrow fat peas. Yuk. My dad and I both opted for the gammon. I ate the egg and a few of the oily brown wedges of potato which I believe were supposed to be chips? I then had a piece of the gammon which I immediately spat out as it tasted off. My father ate about half of his as he was starving but regretted it later in the day as he felt ill. I complained to the waitress and advised that I wouldnât be paying for the gammons. The waitress was great and knocked the cost of the slimy goujons and inedible gammon off our bill. However we will not be returning to the red lion for the service and as the food was mostly inedible we will be going somewhere else to eat next time. Poor
