The restaurant is not in the âhipâ area, in fact quite a bit removed from it, but nonetheless they were doing land- office business when I arrived at 20:30 one night recently. There were probably 20 or so couples and small groups waiting for entrance. Fortunately (for once) I was solo, and got a seat right away at the counter, where I also got to view the operations.âChicken Nan Banâ is on their sign, and from viewing the operations, it is overwhelmingly what is ordered by the mostly- local crowd. Based on online reviews, I had already decided before going that I would have it. Nan Ban Chicken is basically a cutlet (at Tori Shin, a HUGE cutlet) which is breaded, deep- fried, and served. Theirs is dipped in some kind of liquid after being fried and then placed atop a mound of shredded lettuce. The final touch is a ladle of a brownish- orange- colored sauce, no idea what it is but the taste is right. This is offered, with rice and chicken soup, for under 1000 yen for dinner, a genuine bargain. The chicken soup is a simple but very tasty broth with a sprinkling of corn kernels. The crowd at the entrance and any more late arrivals were all seated by the time I glanced back at the lobby 30 minutes later. Service is very quick and no wonder since I only noticed one dish which was not chicken nan ban being served! Some blogs debate whether the best chicken nan ban is Kochi vs. Miyazaki and I think that the consistency and the taste of both places is close enough to say: âNo matter which might be a bit better, have fun, try them all and enjoy!â Regarding my own opinion, the best fried chicken on Shikoku is still a tiny family- run place called ããã¨ãé¿æ³¢ãã©ã. It is just west down the alley from the Hotel Live Max in the port town of Shikokuchuuou.
