The restaurant certainly seems popular enough, seeing that they strictly adhere to two sittings per evening - or at least that was the case when we were there on a Saturday. Weeks in advance we had wanted to book a table for five around 7 pm, but were told that they could only accommodate us for the sitting at 8.30 pm, as the earlier one was already fully booked. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very nice indeed. Very romantic and with breathtaking views, though not onto the bay. As it was already pitch-dark outside at the time of our arrival, the waiter brought us a two pictures of the view with Mt. Fuji taken from the restaurant, for us to keep. A nice gesture, we thought. When our order was taken, we were also asked to choose a dessert. I must say that I cannot possibly know before the main dish what dessert I may feel like, or whether I would even want a dessert! We were told we could still choose from the cheese or the cake trolley, but for anything else we would have to make our mind up at the beginning. The reason given for this was the advanced hour, as the kitchen closes at 9 pm. I have some difficulty understanding why a top-class restaurant would close its kitchen at 9, even though they have a second sitting that only starts half an hour before that!As we had already had a pre-dinner drink elsewhere, and given the advanced hour, we decided to skip the aperitif and starter, though some of us opted for a salad. What then followed was an interesting and very elaborate display of salad-making right at our table. It looked like an artful presentation and was fun to watch. But the whole procedure took about half an hour. We would have valued some bread during the wait, but although we saw baskets with bread being served to other tables, we were not offered any.Everything in this restaurant is pricey. So when we saw the huge bowls of salad for each of the 3 of us who had ordered one, it seemed like good value for the money. But only if you are a big eater, which most of us are not; especially my elderly parents. It was very nice then for my dad to be offered to share his salad with my mother, as he wouldn't be able to eat it all by himself anyway. The same offer was not extended to my wife and me, however, although she indicated from the beginning that it was too much for her. So almost half of hers was returned to the kitchen and was going to waste. The bread finally arrived AFTER the salad was eaten. Very good bread indeed, and various kinds. But they didn't seem too generous with it.The main dish took a long time to arrive. Probably over an hour into our stay. I'm all in favour of 'slow food', but the timing altogether seemed a bit off, with all that time being spent on the preparation of the salad, and then another long wait for the main dish. But although we felt that the service could have been better in places, and that we felt we paid too much for what we got, I can say that the food was delicious, and I cannot fault that. This is also why I'm giving this restaurant an overall rating of "Very Good".

Came for dinner. Only 2 other tables on a Thursday night. The staff are friendly and helpful. Set menu with choice of 4 mains and 3 desserts. The food was nice but not exceptional. The musicians are great. The piano and violin players were able to play my wife’s request which was ABBA! They played Dancing Queen.

Le Normandie

Our main dining room with a panoramic view of Yokohama harbor is inspired by the luxury liner "Le Normandie" created by P. Yves Rochon. Please enjoy the authentic French cuisine.

We were celebrating a family member’s birthday, so wanted to go somewhere with good food and atmosphere, so chose Le Normandie, at the Hotel New Grand, Yokohama (over their Italian restaurant) for dinner, as we had seen good reviews about their menu and their harbour views. To summarise: Service was patchy at best and disappointing for a restaurant of this level (which stipulates a dress code). As we sat down (we were also waiting for one more person to arrive), we were asked whether we wanted an aperitif, which we declined. At that point, most restaurants would have offered water for the table as a matter of course. Not here; our waiter just walked away! I called him back and asked for water for the table - normal water (i.e., not mineral – Japan has some of the most potable tap water in the world). When everyone at our table had arrived and done ordering the food and wine, we still had no water, so I asked the waiter again. He acknowledged forgetting (ok) but then after filling my glass, left without filling the others’! Throughout the evening, there was no offer of replenishing bread, nor water. Our wine glasses were not refilled unless WE prompted - but they were quick to plonk the bottle on the table when it was empty! What was most surprising – and disappointing - was not the fact that these service gestures weren’t offered, but that they weren’t noticed by the staff. This is in a supposedly good restaurant in a good hotel in Japan, where there is fantastic service even in the little local eateries. We had tried to book a table by the window for the view, as we were celebrating a birthday, but unfortunately they were all booked. What we did notice was that the focus of the service was around those tables by the windows. Totally unacceptable in my book. The food was fine – no complaints and some of it was very pleasant, but the poor service completely overshadowed the evening. I will not be going back, and I would certainly NOT recommend holding any special occasions here – unless you have a window seat booking, I guess.

This restaurant is famous for enjoying French with less expensive in Japan. Staff were friendly and explained us all recommended menu with well-known knowledge. Though the Appetizer such as marinated fish and vegetable were so so, main plate such as grilled meat with foie gras and seafood soup with rice were superb. I recommend for you to skip appetizer and go straight to main plate. French Onion Soup is must have if you are onion lover!

Although it's quite pricey, this restaurant is one of the best fine dining establishments in Yokohama. Their signature lobster dish is to die for, and possibly the best lobster I've had in the 3 years I've lived in Japan, and practically makes the whole course dining price pay for itself. Service is outstanding, non-smoking, and very quiet and private. 5 stars!
