We ate here whilst we were staying in the hotel Eychenne (this is the hotel restaurant). We chose to eat here as we'd been on the road all day and it was raining heavily so we couldn't be bothered traipsing around town to find somewhere. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food; the first course was a small portion of boudin noir with apples, wrapped in soft filo pastry. It was very tasty (nice salty home-made boudin noir complemented by sweet apple). For the next course I had sautéed foie gras with poached pear - the liver was very good quality and was nicely offset by the not-too-sweet pear, lightly dusted with cinnamon. For main course I chose veal with morelles. The meat was tender with good flavour and well cooked, and the mushrooms were delicious. We were then served with a cheese plate featuring four different kinds of local cheese, all of which were good apart from the brebis, which was bland. By the time my grand marnier flamed soufflé arrived for dessert I was pretty stuffed and could only manage half (it was huge!), and I was a little bit disappointed that there had obviously been a delay in getting the pudding from the oven to the table, so it had collapsed a little by the time it arrived. The wine list was pretty good; we had a bottle of fitou, which was okay and there was a good selection of other wines from the region. The bill for two of us with the courses described above and a bottle of wine came to â¬115 including service. This restaurant isn't going to win any prizes for cutting edge cuisine, but if you're in st girons and you want to eat good quality traditional french cooking then this is probably your best bet (although to be fair, we didn't eat anywhere else in town).

Stopped by in Saint-Girons to break car journey. Stumbled across this restaurant for lunch. Fortunate to obtain an outdoor seat overlooking river, church and weir. Very pretty indeed. Both ordered set 3 course menu. Starter was a simple salad. For main we both chose a local French style sausage and chips. The sausage looked lovely from the outside, but once cut open, was less appetizing to our English palate. Not to say there was anything particularly wrong with the sausage, it was cooked ok etc, but just a bit too much fat content. Chips were a slight disappointment, slightly overdone and tad greasy, but edible. Dessert was a nice apple tart with cream. Owner was extremely friendly, and liked to be teased about recent British success in the Tour de France. Nothing majorly wrong, just the sausage was a bit to rustic for us.

This restaurant has been here for years. The portions are huge and you will not be disappointed by the flavours. The pizzas are delicious and perfectly cooked. The salads have all fresh regional ingredients and the main courses are typical of the area and delicious. Of all the places in town I would highly recommend booking a table here. I used to go when I lived in Saint Girons and still go 20 years later when I visit on holiday, it hasn't changed one bit. Don't go late though as they tend to want to close if it's not a busy night.

We came to Saint Lizier because bad weather in the mountains forced us to change our plans but the excellent dinner at this restaurant ended a miserable day on a high note. All the 3 courses were outstanding - my partner is still raving about the dessert. The fixed price menu at 27 euros offered 3 choices for each course: for starters we chose carpaccio of veal and the smoked salmon both of which were faultless. Our main dishes were both works of art - mine was sea bream with pesto, while my partner had filet mignon of pork - beautifully presented and delicious. We each had the same dessert, a confection of diced apple with an apricot sauce but my description doesn't do it justice. The restaurant overlooks the river and in good weather, there would be a delightful view from tables by the window (it was grey and wet while we were there). This was the best meal we had during a 2 week trip through France and brilliant value for 27 euros each.We stayed overnight in the hotel, the room was large and comfortable but nothing special and a tad old fashioned (60euro). It was a proper old fashioned breakfast with tasty jams and fresh bread even though it was Sunday (the bakery is just over the road). It is well worth stopping here as the town is charming with little winding streets, a cathedral and a bishops palace. And you can count on eating well!

The setting, on top of a hill, in a former religious astablishment is enough on its own to attract you up there. The building is fairytale and the restaurant is truly superb. Fine dining - and don't turn up in shorts and a t-shirt ! Smart casual will be fine, though. Amazing menu, wine list and cooking. Service is at a leisurely pace but why would anyone want to be rushed in surroundings like this ? There are few places in the world I have visited over 70 years which would surpass the overall experience here. And this ancient place has accommodation as well, apparently, although we visited from outside the immediate area. Waiter more than happy to explain any gaps in my knowledge of food / cooking styles.David, thank you very much for this so kind advice, we are delighted that you have appreciated the places, the cuisine of our chef, the wines and the service. We love your praise of slowness.Regards ,Looking forward to seeing you again

This is a great addition to Saint Girons. Well priced food, fantastic ambience, clearly popular with locals and lovely menu. We went along on spec for lunch and were clearly lucky to get a table - reservations seem to be a must. The carte du jour at â¬12 was superb.

Visited recently with friends who recommended this restaurant. The place is full of atmosphere with stone walls and wooden tables. You could watch the suckling pig roasting in the kitchen, something you don't see very often. The staff were very pleasant and helpful and spoke very good English fortunately. The selection of dishes was excellent and coeliacs were catered for with little problem. The quality of both food and wine was obvious and served with pride. An excellent evening. Thank you.
