Pour moi, c'est encore et toujours le meilleur rapport qualité/prix pour un déjeuner à St-Etienne. C'est frais, bien préparé, bien dressé, très copieux et l'addition n'est vraiment pas salée.

Arrived in St. Etienne with nine hours to kill before England played Wales in the Euros so decided to search out a fine dining experience for the afternoon.Headed a short distance from the city centre and stumbled across l'Escargot and its excellent menu. I wasn't disappointed. Foie gras, steak frites and an amazing cheeseboard washed down with a fine local red.Subsequently joined by several friends, I stayed for seven hours and loved every minute! Excellent food and superb service. Right now I wish I lived in St. Etienne.

The restaurant shows an ambience created to look like a Bouchon Lyonnais with a quite mediocre result. Dreary knitted table cloths and small tables, very noisy if you are unlucky to get here with groups. Quality of food is quite basic, staff is very kind on the other side.

Restaurant was packed when I arrived. No free tables but I was offered a drink at the bar so waiting time was quite pleasant. I was served by Amin who was very friendly and provided professional advice on the local specialities. Food was just superb. I went for a steak with regional cheese souce. Local wine was matched perfectly. Outstanding restaurant point end. Thank you.We are pleased that we have managed to give you a good answer to a situation of full restaurant. Moreover, it is especially nice to see people outside our region appreciate our local products and how to implement them. "Amin" was sensitive to your appreciation. Thank you for your enthusiasm.

A menu is over 40 euros for a very simple starter and a half of Magret as a plate. Dessert was simple too. Food was good but too expensive. They didn't have wine we wanted so we gave our second choice and they have been out of stock again. Keep your wine menu up to date!

We visited Cafe Basque on the recommendation of TripAdvisor contributors. It is very easy to reach in the centre of Saint Etienne, right in an area with numerous other restaurants and pubs. Several of us went for the prix fixe menu, while others opted for just an entree. Everyone found their dishes lovely, with the duck confit and filet mignon deemed outstanding. 150 euros for five people seemed a reasonable deal at the end of the night. We'd come back anytime.Though a couple of our group speak decent French, our server kindly explained everything about the menu in English, which we appreciated, and gave helpful answers to our questions.

Very pleased that they rearranged tables to get our group of five seated. From the tapenade to the petit fours, the food was excellent. The asparagus soup (cold) was stunning although I couldn't detect the pistachio, others could. The poire de boeuf was perfectly cooked and the anchovy tapenade and fried aubergine were perfect accompaniments. The desert of red fruits with rhubarb ice cream rounded of a great lunch.Had local bottled beer and pichets of local wine. Offered great value.Overall wonderful experience.

Very hard to find fault with my dinner here. A smart, stylish, not over-modern dining room with comfortable chairs. Staff smart and just the right amount of attentiveness. Wine list covers a wide range in price, including a good selection of half bottles for us solo business travellers. Dinner was fois gras en gele, preceded by a salt cod appetizer, rather larger than a typical amuse bouche, an excellent filet de boeuf in a St Joseph reduction with a zucchini gratin avec brebis all excellently done. Cheese selection was large and well kept and after another intervening surprise, desert arrived, a special instead of the menu Assortement de Desserts - a soupe au fraise, with an Creme Caramel made with Earl Grey in the center and a herb flavoured ice cream on top, finished with champagne after it was served. Wonderful and, although not cheap, worth the extra $25 or so over
