Top 10 Japanese food in Owani-machi, Aomori Prefecture, Japan

I was looking for something different tonight as hunger kicked in here in wintry Hirosaki. People recommended a place that serves American food as being good... But I cook "American" everyday. And I didn't want random noodles or fast food. Success on all points at Restaurant Yamazaki. They have parking under the building, which I didn't realize, but there are also several options within a block away. It is a small restaurant so you might want to get someone to make a reservation (if you don't speak Japanese) if you have a larger group. I went solo on a Friday at 7pm and was seated quickly (though it is the off season). The staff really doesn't speak English, but they were very accommodating up to indicating which forks to use (very kindly). The menu is entirely in Japanese so I ordered the set menu of which I knew the soup was pumpkin and the dessert had apple in it somewhere. I am very glad I decided to risk it. The bread was warm, perfectly crisp on the outside with a chewy interior. The amous bouche was nicely flavored on a lettuce with mustard dressing. It was some type of meat, that's all I know. Then came scallops, two lovely browned buttery circles of goodness offset with a root vegetable mash and garlic mushrooms. The scallops were just past rare, so they practically melted in my mouth. Yum yum yum. Next came the pumpkin soup which was to die for. Rich, creamy with just the right amount of green onion on top with buttery crisp croutons to really set off the texture. The fish course (2 sea creatures) was nice with a creamed root vegetable side and broccoli garlic sauce over squid (or octopus). Nicely cooked with a firm but not chewy texture. The fish (whatever it was) had a crisp skin and flaky soft texture. Again, cooked very nicely. The main was not my favorite course, but the meat was prepared perfectly, the side was good and I did love the little nuts. I know it is silly to love the garnish most. Sue me. The desert was a layered cake of soft, light, dense cake with "rare cheese" as the center layer over a maple and berry drizzle with homemade ice cream with apple purée. Good end to a complex meal. (The table near me had mont blanche which looked very nice also). The meal ended with an amazing tea (I think it is the apple tea I purchased to take home... I will confirm once I try it). I could have sat for an hour listening to the music and sipping that tea. Perfect! The chef came out as I paid... Unfortunately his English is much like my Japanese but I hope I got across to him how much I enjoyed his creation. Again the staff was attentive (I never ever ran out of water), kind, and pleasant. Not a cheap evening but the flavors were rich, complex, and worth the splurge. Next time I will take a taxi from the hotel or let someone else drive because a glass of wine would have complemented the meal perfectly. So try this for a special evening out. A great and tasty adventure. Half the fun was discovering what I had ordered.
