Le Kotori offers fine Japanese food in a French style. Fine dining for a reasonable price. Surprisingly we found the restaurant empty but luckily we stayed and enjoyed the excellent food. For those who do not (only) want to eat seaweed and raw fish.

Nice and clean. Good atmosphere. Polite and helpful chef, speaks English. Very special homemade desert. Was very lucky to find it on a windy cold evening. They are close to the Castle.

We came across this little bistro by chance, and what a find it was. Rather jaded by days of indifferent Japanese meals, we were ready for as authentic a French experience as it is possible in the Japanese highlands. Kir Royals, citron presse, Badoit, good bread perfect French onion soup and fish soup (complete with rouille toasts and cheese), charcuterie, and on and on. Each was good, and some dishes much better than good. 3 hours later and we happily paid the 8,000 yen bill.

When I go to Kamikochi, I stop at this cafe and enjoy cafe au lait and apple pie every time. This cafe is located next to Kappabashi. If there are few people out side of this cafe, you can enjoy great view of Hotaka mountains through windows. But unfortunately, this place is very popular, it is heart of Kamikochi. So usually there are many people walking outside, they must be bother your views.

First to tell you a bit about the place. It is a Japanese run restaurant of 65 years with a French theme. This is a posh restaurant and hence the food is pricey, expect to spend around £150 minimum for 4 people. Also the French theme means menu is in French and Japanese only and staff speak minimal english. What particularly stands out about this place is the wonderful service, the staff try hard to explain, are very attentive and polite. Bread is regularly given to the table to make sure the restaurant is not left hungry. The restaurant itself has a great ambience and the high ceilings and tapestry on the walls make this place a very pleasant memory. Finally the food simply delicious, as good as any you'll find in France. I ordered a beef brisket which was exceptionally cooked. So to conclude a wonderful restaurant in all aspects however noticeably pricey also

This restaurant is main draining of Kamikochi Imperial hotel.Once you will step into this restaurant, you will be surprised that some ladies wear evening dress and some gentlemen wearing suits. Hotel staff are wearing black suits or director coats. The atmosphere is like dining room in city hotel. Can you believe this hotel is located in very deep mountain?Food quality would surprise you, because chef come from Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. From appetizer to dessert, all dishes make you happy. If they serve nice cheese and espresso, that is perfect! But you have to remember that you are in heart of national park, not in Tokyo! If you welcome celebration, birthday, anniversary, etc., you should inform that in advance.Hotel staff will give special service!

Fantastic setting. Very nicely made dishes and well presented. Maitre de Maison would give you some Japanese ice apple wine to taste on the house. Overal - very impressed (esp compared to a 1 mich star experience in Tokyo just the other day which was ok, but 3 times the price of this). One thing to note is when walking down the street the first set of entrances is shut and the arrow is pointing to the back yard. And it is all kinda deserted and feels like you are on somebody's (very nice) private property. So, go back onto the street and walk further down (in opposite direction to the arrow) and you will find the main entrance.
