We stopped here for a quick snack whilst exploring Capbreton for the first time. The pancake (crepe) was filling. The coffees were not to our taste, but we will go back and try a different drink and try some different food as it was a charming place and the owner/waitress was very pleasant.

La Cuisine

Reviewed By AussieFrog

The little seaside town of Capbreton is nestled alongside Hossegor, one of the premier surf beaches in Europe. Normally I visit in summer where thousands of French and holiday makers descend in a frenzy of sun-seeking and surfing. It's a different sight in winter where most shops and restaurants are closed for the season and tourists are few. It can be slim culinary pickings! So it was a delight to find La Cuisine open and ready to serve a fantastic, simple, yet sophisticated meal.I enjoyed a beautifully textured escalope of foie gras, with a velvet veloute of pumpking (and a velouté is far more push than a purée!). Followed by a simply superb veal blanquette with potatoes cooked in duck fat. Beautiful. Being half French, but growing up in Tasmania (that's a long, long story, don't ask) this brought back vivid memories of my mother's veal blanquette. Le yum, indeed. We were too full to have desserts but hope to try again before leaving town. But what impressed me most was that because it was low season and just days before Christmas, there was only the four of us in the restaurant. It would have been very easy for the chef Johann to have rushed through preparation and cooking to get us out the door to shut up shop, but no - each dish was clearly prepared with passion, attention to detail, cultured presentation and care. His respect for his food was evident and it was an honour to call him from the kitchen to say a personal thank you.His partner Isabelle looked after us with the same level of care, patiently waiting as we translated some menu elements, and also recommending a perfect, well-priced wine: a 'vin oublié', which is a 'forgotten wine'. She explained that the winemakers had forgotten about these particular barrels of wine, then found them and thought they would test, thinking it would only be good enough to throw away - turns out it was a damn fine drop. Now who can't love a wine with a good backstory!?I am no food expert (neither gourmet or gourmand) but I hope I know what a quaility dining experience feels like ans tastes like. It was a wonderful, memorable meal on a cold south-west France winter's night and I would encourage anyone to try them out for lunch or dinner, summer or winter - you will not be disappointed!

We came here on a night we couldn’t get into a restaurant down the road. There were just a couple of folk in which wasn’t a great sign given everywhere else was busy. Anyway...We started with drinks, I wouldn’t recommend the Mohito, not good at all.We moved to wine and got a good bottle of red wine at a very good price. We then ordered a variety of tapas which was very good indeed, with the Coeur de Canard being stand out. The service although uncomplicated did what they should do and so in the end it was a surprisingly good visit. It was also good to see that later in the week, it did get busy.

This is simply a quality place for good food. Seating ,in this smaller type of restaurant, is either indoors or, weather permitting, outside. The menu is not extensive but everything on it cooked with precision and a genuine fondness, by the chef, for satisfying the customer. In all the restaurants we have dined at throughout Europe, this place qualifies as one of the best encountered for fish. He is a maestro.Expertly run by a husband (chef) and wife team, they have provided an excellent dining facility which meets every criteria you would hope for when going out for a meal. Humbly suggest that you always book ahead.

The restaurant is close to the ocean, that is visible from the terrace. I had a very nice culinary experience as I have tried their spinach ravioli which were delicious! Service is friendly and fun, atmosphere very warm, the portions are generous for an affordable price! And if you add the sound and smell of the sea...you count on a very nice experience!

Take issue with T Advisor. This whilst good in what it offers, is not a restaurant but an Oyster Bar. The owners have set their stall out to provide wonderful tasting quality oysters but little else.Consequently do not be mis-led into thinking you can arrive here and select from a wide choice menu as you can`t even obtain a coffee after eating the oysters. They do have two nice quality wines to accompany the said oysters but please let me emphasise this is an Oyster Bar -nothing else !

This gem of a restaurant is an absolute find in Capbreton. From the outside it looks small but on the inside it is jsut fabulous, the fish is outstanding, there is no othe words. The service was with smiles and they helped us understand the menu completely.Drinks and cocktail - house Ameracano - am addicted since. Champagne cocktail was had by another of the party and fine wines. Crisp and beautiful Chalbis served with St Jacques and Sole. An evening to talk long about and treasure. Will return for sure.

I definitely recommend everyone to stop at "La Poupe" when going to Hossegor! On top of a really enjoyable view of the Lake, I had the best Hangover cure with their Oysters and very well balanced white wine to go with it.Staff is extremely nice and helpfull and if your head can still take it, I suggest you try their homemade Paté with chunks of Foie Gras inside: A must ! They also have prawns for those that do not fancy Oysters. Thanks again to "La Poupe" (the owner) for his time and his advice about the area.

Don't be deterred by the outside bland aspect of the restaurant. The restaurant is small and the design understated. But the food... The food is simply fantastic, refined, subtle, tasty, nicely presented... Like in a Michelin starred restaurant. Among other delicious choices, the half cooked tuna with asparagus, freshly fried foie gras and sweet potatoes puree was just memorable. Desserts are amazing too.Prices are painless though. If you are in Capbreton you just can't afford to miss this great experience, admittedly one of the very best in town.
