One of the best preserved and most architecturally demonstrative, Himeji's 400-year-old castle is so exquisite that it alone is worth a trip to the city. The castle is close to the train station, so it makes an ideal short stop on a day trip to several sights.

If youâre looking for a wonderful western food dinner with an amazing Japanese experience. This restaurant is for you. In Japan you have to look up when searching for gems. And this is one of those. On the second floor of a building above a couple of excellent bars BTW, this restaurant serves set price course dinners from 4,000-7000 yen with some extras that cost a bit more. Unless you read Japanese you wonât be able to read the menu but Tanaka-San will try to explain in English. Regardless, trust him and you will be rewarded with an excellent meal. We chose the 5000 yen meal and paid extra for steak. Worth every penny. We ate baked oyster with herb butter, foie gras, potato and mushroom terrine, corn soup with shrimp croquette, steak and vegetables and finished with amazing dessert options. I had the strawberry tart with grand marnier infused strawberries and white chocolate ice cream. My husband had three mini desserts of baked cheese cake, crepe brûlée, and panacotta. The wine list was limited, but reasonable and tasty. Oh and sit at the bar. We had a great time watching Tanaka-San cook and chatting with the other visitors. One had THE most amazing potato gratin. Check out my photos.
Credit where credit is due, my wife found thus gem on tripadvisor with four reviews (three in Japanese and one in German!), none of which she could actually understand. On the strength if that we wandered for 25 minutes through the (very quiet) back streets of Himeji to the most unlikely location for a French restaurant. We nearly gave it away on more than one occasion, and could only half believe it when we eventually saw the sign from across the road. But when we walked in our minds were set at ease by the smartly decorated interior. It was Monday night and the place was empty except for a young Japanese couple. We were presented with menus in Japanese by our waitress, who similarly had little English. At a loss we divined what was clearly a set menu option (the courses were described in French, but as to the actual dishes, there were no clues we could understand) and ordered that. At ¥5,000 a head it was pricey but not outrageous. With wine, we had a similar problem but after sifting through the wine store with the waitress we found a French Pinot that was acceptable, and reasonably priced. The meal began with an 'Amusee Bouche', A very tasty snapper escabeche, served in a tiny porcelain bowl. A delightful starter. The entree consisted of four separate morsels, duck with galette, slices of raw mackerel with a citrus sauce (my favourite), salmon served on a small portion of ratatouille, and another fish with a hollandaise like sauce. None of these disappointed, and complemented each other beautifully. The soup was Potato with mystery ingredient the gave it a red tinge. Again lovely flavour. The fish course was also made up of four separate dishes. All were delicious. The Main was steak 'en crout' with duck liver. A small circular creation which we shared, served with potatoes and roast vegetables. Finally desert was a selection of four small cakes chosen (with difficulty) from a array of a dozen options. French, a la japanoise, with flavours like lychee and mango amongst more traditional tiramisu and cafe. A perfect end to a wonderful meal.Good filtered coffee was served in beautiful porcelain teacups (Doulton, no less!)During each course the chef came over to the table to assess our enjoyment and an interesting conversation ensued in our only common language, French. Unfortunately our vocab was not always up to the task, so some ingredients remain a mystery, but we did learn he had trained in France for two years; it showed. All in all a marvellous experience. The chef clearly enjoys his profession and we are the beneficiaries. For the price it would be hard to find better, more creative French food anywhere in the world. Magnifique!

My family had two weeks of Japanese meals and we were looking for alternatives after we reached Himeji. Thanks to TripAdvisor we found this wonderful restaurant. They have just won a regional government award for their chicken pate! Great value for 4 of us with set meals and wines. The photos below do not tell how good the dishes tasted. We also brought along a bottle of sake which Dimitri was happy to serve us without additional charges. Please ask to try the special celebratory plum sake which Dimitri made for his sonâs birth!
