Cool Deal on a Hot DayAfter 10 days of unrelenting heat here in SW France, spent clearing and redesigning the garden, and building a deck, friends told us we needed a break one lunchtime and asked for ideas for a relaxing lunch. Weâve heard good things about the RâNaissant and decided to try it, particularly since it is only 10 minutesâ drive from our place. On arrival we were shown to a lovely cool shaded courtyard at the back of the restaurant, and offered the plat du jour for under â¬13 per head. This dayâs choices were Onion Tart or help-yourself cold buffet, followed by steak (Robertâ had this and it was HUGE) or fricassee of chicken with chips and salad - not at all greasy, but delicious. Then we had home-made Isles Flottante (see pic) - a local favourite featuring soft cooked egg whites and creme anglaise (custard!). We demolished a litre of a pleasant chilled house white (for a very good price of â¬7) and coffees, with the total bill, including service of just under â¬69. I paid and told my friends the bill to pay their half, they assumed at first the total was their half-share The service was good, despite being a busy lunchtime and just 2 people coping with all of the restaurant, and it was as fast as you wanted it to be - next course was ready when we were, but no pressure to rush you. The temperature in the pleasant, flowery, fully-shaded courtyard was perfect for short sleeves, depite a full sun above,The only problem is that such a nice lunch as this slows down your home improvement plans no end, but hey - why are we here in the first place! Weâll be back, and very soon. Merci RâNaiissant for an excellent experience.

We were en route to The Reclamation Yard and needed lunch and found this place and what a lovely surprise - excellent value, excellent meal and really good value. I had sea food gratin and my husband had the porc starter and we both had roti chicken with chips which came with a lovely jus - 1/4 bottle of great wine included all for 12 euro's - fabulous. Lovely and warm and welcoming on a cold day. Great service, great food, immaculate loos. Very happy.
We ate crepes & gallettes / drank coffee here three times on our 5 day visit. A really nice cosy atmosphere, inside or outside. Prices are pretty good and the crepes are delicious. There are all sorts of other tasty snacks and desserts to be had, but we didn't have enough time to sample them all. Olivier, le chef, is a charming gentleman and brushed away my efforts to speak French with his pretty good repertoire of English. The restaurant (cafe/bistro, really) is about a hundred yards away from a really pretty little park looking out over the river and the old Confolens bridge so even if you're passing through, take 30 minutes out of your itinerary to savour a gallette or a crepe and soak in the peaceful atmosphere in the park.

Recommended by a nice man we met in the village. We went for the plat de jour. Was really nice fish and apricot tart. Lovely terrace to sit with a cool breeze and beautiful view.

This venue is a lot bigger than you might think from the outside and seats a large number of people. Only visited at lunch time so cannot comment on what is on offer the rest of the day, but there was a good selection from the buffet - hot and cold dishes and vegetarians can ask for something specific if nothing on offer(cannot guarantee a large choice however and depends on how busy it is). Hot dishes can be cooked to order.

We were finding it difficult to find a place for lunch on a monday in Confolens, everywhere seemed shut so we thought we would try the station cafe that we had driven past earlier in the holiday. They had a 12.50 euro set four course lunch which also included wine and water! The place was packed with the local workforce having their lunch and we seemed to be the only tourists.I think we were abit of a novelity and at first I worried we would be out of place but the staff were really helpful explaining to us how it worked and what was the main course to us in the best mix of our bad French and their little English. You help yourself to the cold buffet and then they bring you the main course, this is followed by plenty of bread and cheese and then you help yourself to dessert from the cooler. On the table is a large decanter of red wine and jugs of water that you help yourself to. All the food was tasty and we enjoyed the atmosphere and experience.

I rate this restaurant as one of the top in the area. There are two choices of menu, the cafeteria section or the restaurant. Food always very imaginative with self service starter and masses of choices. Service is rapid, and price for midday including wine and coffee is less than 15 euros a head

If you want to go to Esse for a menu du jour please book a table.Three courses for 12.70.There is no wonder you cannot get a table at lunchtime. The food is exceptional. The staff are so polite and efficient. This is our favourite restaurant for lunch.Absolutely amazing. Please go and try it.

We are a funky Tearoom and Art gallery. We have a relaxing seated area under the shade of trees right on the banks of the beautiful Vienne overlooking the old mediaeval town of Confolens. Our aim is to provide freshly made locally sourced food. Our menu i
We have had a holiday home in Confolens for many years, and generally speaking we've avoided any British Abroad establishments - until our French daughter-in- law discovered Nick and Mary's lovely tea shop/coffee shop/café on the banks of the Vienne, right by the old bridge. Picturesque, relaxing setting and perfect home-made cakes, with a very welcoming atmosphere summer and winter alike (they do take a well deserved break between Christmas and Easter) Arts and crafts are on display indoors, and outside there are interesting bits of sculpture and sometimes activities going on. Well worth a visit.
