Find out what French restaurants to try in Bujumbura. Bujumbura (/ˌbuːdʒəmˈbʊərə/; French pronunciation: [byʒœ̃byʁa]), formerly Usumbura, is the capital, largest city, and main port of Burundi. It ships most of the country's chief export, coffee, as well as cotton and tin ore. It is on the north-eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest lake in the world after Lake Baikal.
Things to do in Bujumbura
We shared a meal at this restaurant near Lake Tanganyika in Bujumbura. We were a large group and ate under a tent in the central courtyard. There were smaller areas including niches along the side of the property for one-on-one dining. Like many restaurants in Bujumbura, this one is set inside a walled compound and you don't realize how nice it is until you pass the gate. Elegant ambiance, great food and peaceful setting--in Burundi it's a hard combination to beat.
If you enjoy a good burger this may be amongst the best in Bujumbura prepared by the French Canadian proprietor. You eat in the garden area which can be good or bad depending on how active the insects are but the food is well prepared and good value for money.
This is my second favorite place to chill with friends (the first being Geny's Beach). The menu is standard café fare: cakes, hot beverages, sandwiches, and milkshakes. The food is good, and usually arrives within a few minutes, which is rare for Bujumbura. But the best thing about this place is the atmosphere. The staff is super nice and very attentive - another rarity for Bujumbura! The decor is artsy and fun. The upstairs dining area has a great view of the garden below and the gorgeous hills that border the city. One can sit here for hours, working on a laptop (yes, they have wireless) or sitting and chatting with friends. It's not the same, rushed feeling one gets in the noisy, crowded space of Café Gourmand. The only thing to keep in mind is that they tend to be out of a lot of menu items on Sunday afternoons. Also they don't serve alcohol here, but you can get alcohol at Geny's Beach, by the lake. All around, this is a great little spot, in an unassuming location, just down the stone road right of Café Gourmand, diagonal to the Poissonnerie Nouvelle. Lovely place!

I was staying at the Kiriri Garden Hotel, and the restaurant was part of the establishment. I ate two dinners and all of my breakfasts here during a five day stay. The breakfasts were more than sufficient with wonderful fresh fruit, and eggs made to order. The lunch and dinner menu is a mix of standard fare, along with pizza with a mix of Indian dishes. I had the lamb one night and it was good. Another night a got a selection of appetizers and they were all very good.I wish I could have stayed longer to try more of the menu. The staff are very friendly and attentive.

delicatessen restaurant (salads, sandwiches and Cheese shop). Cold food.
If you want a quick lunch in a nice terrace, Maison Cremerie is the place. Not a coincidence it is always packed during lunch time, both by locals and expats. Although they have salads and warm dishes, I strongly recommend the sandwiches: fresh bread, nice ingredients, great light sauce. Desserts are also nice. On top of this, the service is quick and friendly.
