We stumbled on this restaurant while visiting Vals les Bains. Since our tastes run more toward the traditional, I was pleased to see a menu with offerings that we might enjoy. The wait staff here is pleasant and accommodating, the food was deliciously well prepared, and the setting attractive. The owner takes time to visit everyone, and insure they are enjoying their meal. He shared with us that his daughter had designed the beautiful place mats illustrating scenes of Vals les Bains. The prices in this restaurant are more than reasonable for the quality of the meal. I hope you give this one a try, it is a hidden gem!

This place is not easy to find but well worth it if you can. We were a party of 11 and had a fantastic meal on the balcony overlooking the valley. The view is amazing. The food is all home cooked, with the vegetables coming from their gardens. The staff are fun and because its a restaurant/bar/local shop the opportunity to people watch is definitely available. A great find and a relaxed meal, complete with a violin practice session at the end. The only problem was driving down the windy roads late at night when we finally left.

On yet another wet day in the Ardeche - we visted in April 2014, during the coldest and dampest spring Europe had seen in many years - we decided to ditch our plans for the day and have lunch at La Remise. I had done no research, other than what was on the Michelin site - so when we entered the restaurant, we didn't know what we were getting into. There's no menu - only a choice between 3 or 4 courses, and as we didn't understand the rapid-fire French of the gruff waitress (Yvette, sister of the proprietor), she chose for us. Four courses was her decision - and we were glad she did as the food was great. It started with charcuterie, including the Ardeche speciality la caillette (a small round pie shaped dish made with a mixture of pork and green chard wrapped in caul), followed by two beautifully fresh Ardeche trout served simply with a slice of lemon, then roast pork and vegetables. Desert was a warm cake of some sort (chestnut?), with cream. Washed down with local sparkling water and red wine (again, no choice).Around â¬35 per person, all up.Really a fantastic experience - you've just to go with the flow. And eat everything on your plate. Yvette later found out we were Australian, as one of her sons either now lives or has visited here (not sure which, our French being such that it doesn't even warrant the term 'rudimentary') - and she was genuinely thrilled that we had visited her terre. Afterwards, walk off lunch in the picturesque, village de caractère, Antraïgues-sur-Volane.

Having grown up around the village, this was the first time we had visited the 'Castagno'! A friendly welcome with aperitifs on the terrace was followed by a great tasting meal! All of the food and wine is recommended, very tasty. Even had a chat with the chef afterwards, and phoebe our petit chien was also welcomed. Would recommend to all as a lovely place to spend an evening in Antraigues!Chris and Shona

We had the duck which was excellent! The flavours of the dish fitted very well together. Its obvious this chef loves his work. The waiter is very helpful in recommending the best wine and doesn't hesitate to have some friendly small talk. The atmosphere its layed-back with a real French homey feeling because of it being a bar during the day. Would recommend it to everyone!

We sat down and the waitress accepted our order for a café au lait. In about 1 minute she came back , we do not wish to serve you a coffee. Whilst clearly on another table were having drinks and coffee. Why accept first and refuse later on. If you do not show the manners and hospitable sympathy, then do not exploit a restaurant as your trade is hospitality. One thing for sure, I will never eat at a place where the patron has no manners or does not have the right mind for hospitality. Cordialement

This restaurant was recommended to us and did not disappoint. The owner is very friendly and helpful in explaining the menu. The main idea is that you choose from 3 options. Local foods, Mediterranean foods or vegetarian. We tried to remember all the items but simply went for option 1 and 2. The plates are spectacular and contain lots and lots of different dishes, all served on one plate. Together with the excellent wine made for an enjoyable evening.
