Kollam (IPA: [koɭɭəm]) or Quilon (Coulão), formerly Desinganadu, is an old seaport and city on the Laccadive Sea coast of the Indian state of Kerala. The city is on the banks Ashtamudi Lake. Kollam has had a strong commercial reputation since the days of the Phoenicians and Romans. Fed by the Chinese trade, it was mentioned by Ibn Battuta in the 14th century as one of the five Indian ports he had seen during the course of his twenty-four year travels. Desinganadu's rajas exchanged embassies with Chinese rulers while there was a flourishing Chinese settlement at Kollam. In the 9th Century, on his way to Canton, China, Persian merchant Sulaiman al-Tajir found Kollam to be the only port in India visited by huge Chinese junks. Marco Polo, the Venetian traveller, who was in Chinese service under Kublai Khan in 1275, visited Kollam and other towns on the west coast, in his capacity as a Chinese mandarin.

We went to Hotel Mahalekshmi, at Kollam on our family vacation after recommendation from an acquaintance. To tell you the fact, we all are a much happier family after having eaten there. The place is very welcoming with a very humble and quick service, suggestions pouring in by the owner on what to try. Each dish was very distinct in taste and awesome, which left us asking for more.From dal to veg curries to the most awesome varieties of the fish, the fresh catch from the noon..... followed by most awesome payasam, everything was lip smacking delicious! The best part is the love and joy we sense through their food, it just touches your heart and leaves you overwhelmed with care! In our whole trip through out Kerala we did not get such good food anywhere else! This place is epitome of Indian hospitality! For authentic Kerala food - Hotel Mahalekshmi it is! Our heartfelt thanks!

The KFC in kollam was not up to my expectations... was just an average restaurant that day... the popcorn chicken I ordered came with less number of pieces and there was a lump of turmeric powder thrown over a few chicken pieces... but as I like turmeric flavour it didn't make me unhappy... I was unhappy only about the quantity...but many don't expect and don't like the presence of raw turmeric powder... another one I ordered was the chicken longer... and the sauce quantity and the onion rings and lettuces were just one or two...that seem to be kept for namesake... taste was okay....took time to come to my table.....
