Things to do in Candler
Drive along this 1950's looking stretch of highway west of Asheville, and there you'll find the Hot Dog King. Not sure about the "King" part because these are your standard little pink doggies in supermarket quality buns. As a matter of fact, the buns were a bit crusty, as if they were toasted at some point but cooled off. Sure, you can get the variations you'd expect: plain, cheese, chili, slaw, kraut, foot-long, etc. Sides are also pretty much what you'd expect from a roadside place in the mid-south -- fries, onion rings, fried okra, slaw and more. Maybe I expected too much -- I really wanted thick, juicy all-beef dogs with soft buns making you spring for another one to chase down the first. In fairness, there were burgers and other choices posted on the wall besides doggies. I ordered a kraut dog and my wife got the cheese dog. Sides of onion rings and fried okra seemed junior sized, especially at that price. For some reason, three orders came out ahead of mine as I waited at the counter. I don't know why. A couple of hot dogs with sides did not seem very complicated. I guess it's okay for a local eatery, and maybe the fire truck crew and the police standing in line raised my expectations too high. So I guess I can say now that I ate at the Hot Dog King.

The cheeseburgers here aren't bad (you can choose between mayo and mustard burgers). The hot dogs are okay, too. The tater tots, however, are a poor substitute for real fries. But what I sort of resent here is feeling obligated to tip the people who bring you your order, whether you're in the drive-through or at the drive-in parking spots. I'm usually a generous tipper, but I don't like tipping at McDonald's or fast-food places like that, including Sonic.

So, I get it, you are religious, but to have Praise Jesus plain while I eat my Chicken wings is well plain old insulting! You a business that opens it's doors to who ever walks it. You should also have the ability to remain neutral rater than allow the Duck Quacks to promote you on TV or now have Gospel music playing for all to hear and to try to stomach! It is a total disregard to thise who live and worship differently than you! Your narrow vision for your business will in the end be your downfall! Enjoy now but one day.. you will need the people by our have shunned and made to feel uncomfortable ! My feeling when I left tonight was sad embarrassment for such disregard to others not just any others! They were your customers! We're is key word! If you eat here know it is a political church more than a restaurant!

It's the basics. Hot dogs and fries were fine. I've had better but not at the price. Speed of completion of orders is great. The slaw on top is unique. Give it a try. If you are looking for fancy or whatever, go elsewhere, but I think it is a cool alternative to the typical fast food places.
