There are many reasons to visit Jaenicke's Root Beer Stand at 390 East River Street, off I-57, in Kankakee, Illinois. People have been visiting the iconic restaurant since 1940, long before there was an Interstate highway or McDonald's or Burger King or Wendy's or A&W or Dog 'n Suds. Jaenicke's specializes in home-made root beer, as good or better than A&W drive-ins used to produce, red hots with chili, Chicago-style hot dogs, chili cheese fries, fried pickles, ice cream floats and something unique called "sauce buns." What is a "sauce bun?" Folks in the Kankakee area talk about them all the time. Never duplicated. Never imitated. One of a kind. A "sauce bun" is chili that has a sweet and mild BBQ sauce taste. It isn't served on a hot dog. It's simply a meat sauce with cheese and onions on a warm hot dog bun. Try it with fries and a root beer float. It might change the way you look at food. One thing's for sure: Jaenicke's homestyle root beer is as good as you've ever tasted, in a frosty mug. If you're not into hot dogs (who isn't?), other sandwich options are tenderloin, chicken, Italian beef, BBQ, meatball and Polish. No matter what you choose, be sure to wash it all down with root beer.

My wife and I had to drive all the way from downtown Chicago to Bourbonnais, about 50 miles or so, to eat at an A&W restaurant. Times have changed. When I was growing up in the 1950s in Blue Island, I had to walk only one block to an A&W drive-in to enjoy the world's best tasting root beer in a frosty mug. Founded in 1919, A&W turned a root beer brand into a restaurant chain that grew to 2,000 locations by 1960. You could find A&W in Guam. Today, the number is closer to 200. But a stop at the A&W on Route 50 in Bourbonnais brought back many pleasant memories of a bygone era when our Pony League coach bought root beers for all his players after each victory. We went 15-0 that year. During our upcoming vacation in Florida, we plan to stop at A&Ws in Tampa and Pinellas Park. Until then, we'll be satisfied with the Papa Burger and coney dogs and hand-breaded chicken tenders and root beers we enjoyed in Bourbonnais. The Papa Burger consists of 1/3 pound or two juicy 100 percent beef patties, two slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles splashed with A&W's signature sauce on a lightly butter-toasted bun. The coney dog is an all-beef hot dog topped with A&W's signature meaty chili sauce and sweet onions. Best of all, the root beer is as tasty as ever, smooth and cold and not too sharp, with a foamy ring around the top of a frosty mug. It was worth the long trip on I-57 to Bourbonnais to relive the past.

The cheeseburger, whether single or double, is the best in the area. Fries are figured in the price. I recommend splurging and buying a Green River with your meal. The burgers are so good that I haven't tried their other options, including daily specials. Plan on taking it home or eating in your vehicle. There's room for three people in the lean-to. Buy local, eat local.

This one one of the worst hot dog experiences Ever! Thankfully after 2 bites, the young lady returned my money. What happened to firm meaty hot dogs that were steamed, not steeped in water for 24 hours. The hot dog was disgusting. Avoid this place.

I was visiting the area and ate here many times because it was so good! The choices included healthy delicious items as well as the amazing rhubarb dessert. The soup and bread was a very good choice when I needed something light and quick. I used the online ordering once and it was very easy. My only complaint was sometimes there was a long line (although it moved fairly quickly).
