Vitoria-Gasteiz (/vɪˌtɔːriə ɡɑːsˈteɪs/, Spanish: [biˈtoɾja ɣasˈteiθ], Basque: [ɡas̺teis̻]) is the seat of government and the capital city of the Basque Autonomous Community and of the province of Araba/Álava in northern Spain. It holds the autonomous community's House of Parliament, the headquarters of the Government, and the Lehendakari's (Prime Minister's) official residency. The municipality — which comprises not only the city but also the mainly agricultural lands of 63 villages around — is the largest in the Basque Autonomous Community, with a total area of 276.81 km (106.88 sq mi), and it has a population of 242,082 people (2014). The dwellers of Vitoria-Gasteiz are called vitorianos or gasteiztarrak, while traditionally they are dubbed babazorros (Basque for 'bean sacks'). Vitoria-Gasteiz is a multicultural city with strengths in the arts, commerce, education, healthcare, architectural conservation, aeronautics, vehicle industry, oenology and gastronomy. It is the first Spanish municipality to be awarded the title of European Green Capital (in 2012) and it is consistently ranked as one of the 5 best places to live in Spain. The old town holds some of the best preserved medieval streets and plazas in the region and it is one of very few cities to hold two Cathedrals. The city also holds well known festivals such as the Azkena rock festival, FesTVal, Vitoria-Gasteiz jazz festival, and the Virgen Blanca Festivities.

Came with local friends. Came back with my parents. Great both times. Not sure why mexican is in the description. This is modern basque food. Shrimp croquettas, morcilla, and langostinos wrapped in jamon were great. Best bravas ive had in town! I think they use franks hot sauce in the salsa brava, and its awesome. Hopefully we go back before we leave

Visited after reading the many positive reviews but was not overly impressed. This is partly because as my friend has the most annoying combination of dietary requirements, I could not try their signature dishes (minimum for two). I had tempura de bacalao (small cod fish croquettes) and a dessert (custard cream) and wine. I did not like the tempura very much, I found them very salty and not particularly yummy. The custard was nice. Iâd go back only if I could try the degistacion de pintxos menu.

El TabanKo is one of our fixed visits when the night goes down. A relaxed environment, well served cold beer and a nice mix of Basque and Andalusian Tapas makes it a keeper in our list.The restaurant has only a few tables so make sure to book on the weekends.

Food there was gorgeous. Cuttlefish (chipirones), cod gratin (bacalao gratinado), octopus (pulpo) and others - all can be recommended without hesitation. You are given a kind of order leaflet, you tick the dishes you want and give it back to the waiter. Apart from pinchos at the bar, the food is prepared to your order (not reheated like in many tapas bars) so it arrives hot and fragrant. Place was almost full on Saturday with kitchen definetely busy and we had to wait a bit for hot dishes but it was worth it. Wine also good. Absolutely a must visit for foodies.

We have had dinner in this restaurant during our holiday in North Spain in February. The restaurant offers a very good value for money tasting menu. This winter it was a truffle menu (which can be found on their website). The dishes were truly amazing! We have eaten in several Michelin starred restaurants, and this was definitely up to those standards. The dining room is decorated nicely and the tables are positioned so that every table has enough privacy. The food was perfect! In total we have spend 138 euro for 2 persons, for the tasting menu including a bottle of wine, a bottle of water and coffee. You should definitely go here!

El Clarete is an absolute must visit in Vitoria-Gasteiz. It offers real Basque pintxos with a creative twist to it. Definitely worth trying are the so-called cucharas or spoons filled with a delicious topping. It isn't cheap compared to other pintxo bars, but it is still very affordable for the added quality they serve. I did not take a full menu, but chose a variety of different pintxos and tapas accompanied by an excellent red wine. I think this is the way tourists should visit El Clarete.

We ate here twice in our stay in Vitoria as the food was really good, and the owner was willing to spend time explaining the menu, and how big a portion might suit. His English was excellent. The wine was very good, and reasonably priced. We would have eaten there again, but it was fully booked on our last night

It is an excellent choice for people wanting to enjoy great sea-food, fish or meat. It is not a fancy, sophisticated restaurant, but certainly one of the places in Vitoria where you will enjoy the food the most. The sea-food is super-fresh and with a huge variety to chose from. The fish is exceptional, I would recommend "besugo" (sea bream). It as been run by the same family for about 50 years. They know their business and they handle it really well. The service is friendly and efficient. To top it all the prices are very reasonable.We really appreciate your opinion. Hope you visit us soon.Thank you.
