Dodds Restaurant

Dodds was recommended by our accommodation and did not disappoint. We were made very welcome and the staff were attentive and helpful. There is plenty of choice on the menu - I thoroughly enjoyed the grilled goats cheese (I had never imagined what a delight goats cheese can be when paired with caramelised pear) and home made potato gnocchi (which our waiter advised was his favourite and it quickly became mine too!). My husband thoroughly enjoyed his garlic bread and pizza - which was spicy and well flavoured. Unfortunately we were so full that we didn't have space for a pudding - perhaps next time!

Had a little time to study the menus outside whilst waiting for friends and there really is a very good choice. You need to look out for the chalk boards as the standard menu and a piece of paper with a few extra dishes is what you're provided with.Had the snails for the second time in England and they were excellent; came with the appropriate equipment and some bread to soak up the garlic butter. Delicious. The Lamb Shank wasn't the biggest but it was cooked well with a few roasted veg.The wine was good, we had a few bottles. The Red was stone cold and they did try to warm it up but that's not easy when you're at the wrong temperature to start with. Looking forward to our next visit.

We went for the minimum five courses as our appetites are not what they were!!The stand outs were the Salmon and Cod but the other three were also very nice. There was a slight mix up in that they thought we were vegetarians and we are not! However, the plus side is we got to eat food we would never have ordered! Also with this quality I might just become a vegetarian!!The front of house staff were both very helpful and charming which made for a very pleasant evening. There are only about 20ish covers so book early!!!

We came here for afternoon tea whilst staying in Ambleside. We had been inspired to come here after watching The Trip with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. The house itself is beautiful. An old country manor with gorgeous views over the countryside and Windermere lake. A lovely log fire in the reception. We had booked champagne afternoon tea for 15:30. We were taken to our table and were lucky enough to be sitting in a bay window overlooking the lovely view. So at over £40 a head, we had high expectations of what we were about to receive. The room we were sat in was modestly decorated with old ornaments and furniture. They had a blow heater in the corner, as it was a bit chilly that day. Strangely, all the lights were off in the room. It was somewhat dim. We were fine as we were sat in the window but felt a bit sorry for the other diners. Our waiter came and started to ask us a question, but then stopped and explained that his English wasn't very good, and then carried on. His English was broken but he was able to make himself understood. He took our orders for hot drinks. At one point, I thought that they had forgotten about our champagne and wasn't too bothered but it did arrive after our tea had been brought to us. It was ok champagne. Nothing too exciting. I have no idea what champagne it was as no one said anything when it was brought. They just put the glasses on the table and left. Another waiter came and asked if we had any dietary requirements, which we did not. Despite not having dietary requirements, I am admittedly somewhat fussy, and do not like smoked salmon and think egg sandwiches are disgusting (just personal taste). Our tea arrived, which was following shortly by our sandwiches. The sandwiches were smoked salmon, egg, ham & mustard, and cheese & pickle. They were decent sized finger sandwiches and the bread was fresh. There were two of each kind and, with my preferences, I could only eat two of the finger sandwiches. There were also two slices of sausage roll. Normally when we've been out for afternoon tea, if you would like extra sandwiches for whatever reason, then most places will happily accommodate that. We flagged down a waiter and asked if we could have some more ham & mustard and cheese & pickle sandwiches. Nothing fancy. The waiter seemed a little confused and said he would ask. He came back around 5 minutes later to say that they had run out of sandwiches.... We thought this was quite amusing. We assumed that this meant they had ran out of bread, margarine/butter, ham, cheese, etc. Or that the chef had gone home and there was no one else left capable of making a sandwich. No alternative was offered. So I only had two finger sandwiches. And for the price we were paying I expected more. The scones were nice but they came with passionfruit compote?! When they brought the sweet course, the lady explained that the scones came with passionfruit compote, but asked if we would also like strawberry jam instead. We opted for the strawberry jam. The compote was nice but we didn't feel it fit with a country afternoon tea. The cakes were decent. The best thing in the sweet course was a set vanilla yoghurt. That was delicious. The staff weren't particularly good. There was a definite language barrier for some of them. They weren't very attentive or very warm or friendly. Our bill came to £81 for two people for a champagne afternoon tea. This is very expensive for such a meal. Even with champagne. And we really felt the quality of the afternoon tea did not match the price tag. How on earth you can charge over £40 per head for afternoon tea but run out of sandwiches is beyond me. It's a shame because it is a beautiful house with lovely views. But I wouldn't come back here. It wasn't worth the money.

We chose here for our anniversary dinner and we were impressed from start to finish! Lovely venue, service was impeccable, the courses were timed perfectly, the decoration on our table was a nice touch. As my wife is Coeliac it was good to see such a varied Gluten free menu, the food was tasty and the flavour combinations were amazing. Would happily visit again when we're in the area. Thank you for picking Cedar Manor for your special anniversary dinner. We are pleased to be around 90% gluten free throughout this menu and intend to keep it that way as we develop new menus.Look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to the Lakes.Best wishesCaroline and Jonathan

Visited for a dinner for four adults. Food is really fabulous but the experience is sadly lacking. The views are outstanding but the dining room feels lacking in atmosphere - cold and echoey. The team are nice but lack the training and edge you would expect of other similarly priced restaurants. Would I return? Honestly not sure - there are better experiences in the area for a similar price.
