Things to do in Tarbes

While it may NOT feature as a top holiday destination, Tarbes is an attractive city, capital of the Bigorre since the 9th century, close to some fine ski resorts and also near some of the toughest Pyrenean climbs that the Tour de France has to offer. The area has a rich gastronomic heritage : Foie gras, Bayonne ham, Roquefort, Agen prunes, Cassoulet, Garbure, Tarbes beans etc etc. The sublime Armagnac is from these parts, the powerful Madiran red wine and the sublime white Jurancon wines come from nearby Pau. L'Epicerie is located in a historic district close to the Cathedral and has a bustling very attractive terasse. Service is impeccable and the food is fine and reasonably priced. The seafood platter is well presented and desserts are to die for. I was underwhelmed by the cheese plate which seemingly consisted of processed cheese slices with some salad on the side. Overall verdict : pleasant experience.

This restaurant was recommended to us by our hotel (the woman who checked us in clearly did not love the top rated choice we had planned to go to). We were at Le Fil a la Patte on a Thursday evening and it was filled with locals. The single waitress who served all tables did a great job, both in staying on top of orders and food and also managing to communicate with us through the language barrier to recommend food and drink. We each had the 3 course prix fixe menu. My son and I chose the beef and my husband the duck. The desserts were especially wonderful - mousse for my son; 4 small different dessert tastes for my husband. Overall, great meal and wine, and a memorable restaurant experience in the City of Tarbes, where we chose to spend the night primarily because of location on our route.

A simple menu of fresh local ingredients and cooked as requested. VERY good service; attentive, timely and not intrusive. Someone has piut in the necessary time to train staff to this level. Well done. Definitely recomended.

I do not usually write reviews or pretend to think that my opinion is one of authority - however I have done a good deal of traveling and consider myself well-versed in the kitchen. There are a myriad of restaurant choices for any foreigner such as myself in a great place like Tarbes, but few offer the perfect combination of pushing culinary limits and making you feel right at home. Patati Patata believes in fresh ingredients and a fresh atmosphere, however there is not the usual post-modern smugness that can be found in restaurants like it. The wait staff is friendly and even the owner came and greeted this weary American traveler and offered a free appetizer on the house. He actually went to school in the Midwest region of the US and thus offered to make me some grilled cheese and get me a beer! I was feeling adventurous, though, and tried their Sushi as well as the special of the day. It was so good that, even though I was staying in Tarbes for only a few days, I ate there for brunch the next day and drinks later that night!I highly recommend this to any traveler who is looking for a tasty take on French Cuisine, a warm atmosphere, and an excellent vantage point to enjoy the city of Tarbes!

We were directed here by our hotel on a quiet Monday night and at first thought it closed, because it was empty when we walked in. Service was prompt and friendly. Our meal was not cheap, but the food was very good and with big servings. I had the "Hamburger du moment", which came with blue cheese, salad and fries. Delicious. We shared a nice crème brûlée for dessert. The house wine was tasty. Worth a visit. Just behind the church on the main square.

We love small, charming, excellently run restaurants with wonderful food and this fit the bill perfectly. We arrived at 7:30 pm, opening time, without a reservation on a Tuesday night and it was fine. Service was superb and the prix fix menu was yum. Highly recommended.

We had an excellent meal Le Monocle. Our fish plate was expertly prepared and presented. The potion were ample. Desert was sumptuous. We learned about local Jourancon wines that paired excellently with our fish dish. Service was flawless. Prices were average for the area. I considered it good value.

Charming, cozy, little restaurant, I mean small, like 4 tables of 4. Very nice atmposhere, with low background music, friendly service with humour and all at a reasonable price. We could not figure out the menu at first (roast beef with pasta?) but once you get the dish you understand. Basically is a bed of mixed pasta (all sorts of pastas, mixed together) with whatever you order on top.You get large portions, is well presented, topped with a few large thin slices of cheese and sprig(s) of fresh herbs. Looked and smelled great. I liked mine alot. There were 5 of us eating, three of us thought it was delicious, two were not impressed (one making the qualification that if they understood they were ordering a pasta dish, they would probably have chosen something else).Deserts were large and very good, but we were so full, it was two deserts and 5 spoons....I recommend this place.

The delicious food in each of the courses was paired with good wine. The service was excellent, staff always attentive to our needs, and the overall team was very welcoming. Good value considering the quality of the food and service. On top of that, there is a great atmosphere in a nicely designed restaurant. I would recommend this establishment not only for couples but also for family and friends!
