South Limburg ("Zuid Limburg" in Dutch) is that low-hanging southern panhandle, nearly disconnected from the rest of the Netherlands by borders all around. Yes, proximity of borders explains one of the differences of "Zuid Limburg" to the rest of the Netherlands. One of the oldest and most typical towns of South Limburg is Sittard, a town at the northern limit of South Limburg, and at the most narrow neck of "Zuid Limburg" and Dutch territory. Sittard is book-ended within 5 miles, to the west by Belgium, to the east (even a shorter distance) by Germany. Many in South Limburg are proud to speak their own language, dialect or patois and, again, this is certainly true when dealing with folks in Sittard. In turn, this âLimburgishâ language is a direct sponge reflection of the border reality of the region, next-door to three different cultures: German, Flemish and French. Yes, French has long been present in this border town as well. Legend has it that one of the early visitors from France to the region, at one point, looked at the time, and said: "Si tard?", meaning "this late?". Anyhow, we're talking conjecture here... On the other hand, in contrast, it is never too late, when in Sittard, to enjoy an unusually old market square certainly worth exploring. Flanked by ancient churches, the place is also lined with little eateries and cozy Dutch cafés, which is the Dutch take on drinking holes or pubs... There are so many around this Sittard market place that it takes some willful and intelligent effort to get to know them all. Don't forget your wallet either! Doing the tour, always a bit at your own risk (how much beer can you handle), one of the "must" places to hit is "Schtad Zitterd" (meaning "Town Sittard" in the local patois) and, allegedly, the dean, one of the most senior pubs or cafés in town and in South Limburg altogether. Like many of the other eateries and drinking holes around the square, on a sunny day, or even on a chilly day, "Schtad Zitterd" provides comfortable side-walk seating and a great vantage point from where to take in the local people traffic, incidentally, strictly pedestrian or on bikes... While doing so, this is also the place to enjoy a wide selection of beers, wines, and inexpensive hearty local dishes... If just wanting a quick bite, be sure to try their "bitter ballen" (small hot little meat-balls, brittle on the outside, soft on the inside), and perfect companions to a good glass of chilled local beer. If real hunger needs are to be sated, try their steak and fries... Great on the taste buds, great on price. For more choices, check with one of the pretty (and pleasant) young waitresses. Service is excellent at the place, and sometimes even includes the pleasure of little food tidbits on-the-house.

If you ask for restaurant recommendation in Sittard market square, the locals will most likely suggest MEDS. I went there a few times. The menu is not that extensive, just like many local restaurants, but it never bothers me. Each time, I opt for the surprise menu. You can choose 3 or 4 course set, tell the waiter what you DONT LIKE. The rest is up to the Chef. So I usually have starter, main course and dessert. Each time I walk out feeling full and satisfied. The portion is generally bigger than I need so I hardly can finish the dessert. The dishes are beautifully presented and Creative. Food quality is 8/10. Service 7/10. Highly recommended.

Ristorante Via Pozzo is an Italian restaurant with traditional meals. The best meat, fish and pasta's can be find here. A long with some of the best Italian wines and good service it's guaranteed to be a great night out!
I had heard great things about this place and we had been meaning to visit for a while. We (family of 4) walked in with no reservation on a week night. Luckily there was 1 table left and the owner was more than happy to squeeze us in. The service was outstanding as was the food. I spoke with the chef who was Italian and his passion for food and the pride he took in his dishes was impressive. The Spaghetti alle vongole was on par with anything I tasted in Italy. Highly, highly recommended!!!

Denk
We had an excellent culinary evening at this newly opened quality restaurant in a nice location. G7 serves excellent food with a diverse variety of wines. The G7 menu is the recommended choice which is a surprise menu with great variation in meat and fish with some unusual dishes. The chef plays a lot with sweet and sour accents. The wines complement the dishes. Personally I feel the quality of the surprising wines are above average. The restaurant is run by the owners of the Kolentip, and it shows in the quality of the food and wine. Just make a reservation, but make sure to plan enough time to enjoy the meal. You will not regret it!

Small but nice and cozy living room decorated "eatcafe" on restaurant level. About thirty seatings for dinner, drinks only limited if there is a free table or on reservation for whisky lovers. Over 550 whisky's in stock, expert advice is always possible!
This restaurant is located in a side street of the central market place. But boy, is this a place to take a short stroll to. First of all, the reception. Very hearthy and open. Then, of course, there's the gargantuan number of whisk(e)ys on offer, most of them for very decent prices. And the owner gives excellent advice. Last but not least: the food is excellent. Extras for those who speak Dutch/Flemish: the interesting items posted in the toilets.Thank you so much for your fantastic review Pascal! Maybe someday, I will find some time to translate, next to our menu (already in English), also the toilet-items into English.
Best Greek food near Sittard, Limburg Province, The Netherlands

Although the fresh interior was promising, the new menu is very different.I think they aim for a less traditional Greek menu, more Mezedes (Tapas-like) approach.I expect they will attract a different group of people with that. Not sure if that's us...Thanks for your review...We are trying to overcome the standart "Greek" kitchen that is presented in Europe, and bring in more and more traditional Greek food, what we serve as Meze, what is more commen in Greece than meat and fries...I hope we will welcome you back, and impress you with our new setup..Greetings
