Call in late evening and you will join the locals of Velas. Itâs a bar for the locals, a restaurant and an outside eating area. The menu is varied and reasonably priced and has something for everyone. You get a real sense of being part of the island. The service is efficient and friendly.

Modern setting, neat place, just off the main road in Urzelina. Great pizza; choice of small, medium and large. Small size would be just right for one person; I ordered the mid, couldn't quite finish it. Highly recommended for an informal meal. Service was very good.

We wanted hamburgers, but the girl behind the counter didn't know if they had any. So she had to ask the cook, who was smoking on the terrace. When she came back, she said they had hamburgers, so we ordered two and sat down on the terrace. After a while, the hamburgers came with fries. The hamburger tasted ok, nothing special, but the fries were not fried long enough. The waitress and cook didn't look like they were glad there were customers...But the view is great! Thanks

Rather than waiting in the airport call in for lunch at this lovely restaurant. It is Almagro st opposite. Great fresh fish menu, the octopus was delicious. Inside and outside seating in a pleasant courtyard. This was a Sunday and not too busy at all. I believe it is closed on a Tuesday, worth checking. Good prices and large portions.

Unimpressive restaurant from the outside, has a large and well lit area upstairs. Excellent food overall, grilled fish (enchereu) especially good. Copious amounts of food. The Frei Gigante white wine from Pico is an excellent dry that will go perfectly with the fish. Very good desserts with an excellent passion fruit mousse/pudding. The best choice in Velas, we kept returning.I noticed that this restaurant prepares lunch boxes for hikers - if in line with the rest of the food definitely to try!

Restaurant BooKa informs the whole community that it´s closed in order to enjoy ourservices, due to relocation of the restaurant at the end of this month. Thank you for your understanding. Raquel Oliveira.
Restaurante Booka stands out because of how helpful and friendly people are (not sure if they are owners or staff or both). Whether it's talking you through menu options or, in my case, firing up the kitchen a few minutes earlier than planned because I had a boat to catch that evening, the owners make Restaurante Booka a special place indeed. The enthusiasm the chef has for the food is infectious and the quality of food is indeed head and shoulders above other restaurants in Velas. Delicious! The dining room has panoramic windows and is beautiful. The only thing that might confuse guests is the entrance / the building from outside: the restaurant is above a Chinese discount shop and not heavily signposted from the road, so its entrance is not very prominent and you have to climb up the stairs to its door.Highly recommended!Muito Obrigada! Esperamos voltar a vê-la em breve.Thank you so much. We hope to see you again soon

Traditional dishes adaptet to a post-modern cuisine. On a wet, misty Sunday in June, we found O Branquinho and ...what a pleasant surprise. From the welcoming smile, the choice of dishes on the menu, the delicious presentation, the succulent taste, the view of the kitchen (inspiring), the choice of wines ... all combined to bring rays of sunshine to the table.A most enjoyable mealObrigado

This small cafe is located on the outskirts of Velas - opposite what appeared to be an ambulance/ fire station and a few minutes' walk from the Hotel Sao Jorge. We had a coffee and pastry (small selection of the latter). There are a small number of indoor and outdoor seating / tables. We had to abandon our seat outside due to being joined by two people smoking. Whilst this cafe is fine if you're passing, we wouldn't recommend going out of your way to find it.

Restaurant Fornos de Lava" with panoramic view, fresh fish, meat , seefood and organic vegetables & salads from the garden.
Very well located above Velas with a view to Pico. Nice view on clear days. If it's not cloudy or windy, you can probably have a nice lunch/dinner outside (we didn't).Food is good, but nothing special. It's definitely above standards of the island, but still rustic country food. However, it's priced very differently, way too high, which does not give you (anything close to) value for money. In that sense it's a tourist trap, and beware what they charge you for.Service is at best slow but well intended. But still probably the best cuisine we had so far on Sao Jorge.

We enjoyed our meal here overlooking the harbour. The octopus & steak mignon were cooked to perfection, very tasty! My compliments to the chef. The owner was very helpful & offered me a gorgeous red wine to go with my local cheese starter
