Where to eat European food in Ooty (Udhagamandalam): The Best Restaurants and Bars

July 22, 2020 Major Galusha

Find out what European restaurants to try in Ooty (Udhagamandalam). Popularly referred to as Ooty, this gem among southern hill resorts is covered in eucalyptus and pine trees and coffee and tea plantations. On a clear day, it's possible to see as far as the Mysore plateau from Dodabetta Peak, the district's most prominent viewpoint. The Stone House, a landmark 1822 bungalow, and St. Stephen's Church are remnants of the area's first British settlement. Also noteworthy: formal botanical gardens, a children's mini-garden and a contemporary art collection.

Let me give a background of myself. I have traveled to over 20 countries on business, staying only in Business and Luxury hotels. I am not a suit, just jeans and sneakers. In my travels, I have tasted every local cuisine, dish, and beer. Reindeers, wild boars, octopus, snails, you name it. I am not bragging, but just trying to say that I really know what fine dining is.Disclaimer: I am a genuine customer, with no commercial interests in this restaurant, nor am I getting paid for this review. Also, I am a resident of Ooty and have a diverse taste for food, ranging from the local Bhojanalaya, A2B, and all the restaurants in the center of the city. Royal Cafe is a stone's throw from the noisy charring cross. Yet, it is located in a small alley away from the mainroad. This makes it such a silent setting for a restaurant in the heart of Ooty. The restaurant is decorated in a style which is a fusion of classic Mediterranean lighting ambiance, classic-British style chairs, and a formal layout of tables in three rows spaced neatly. This gives a lot of elbow room, more than adequate chair rearing space without bumping into other diners. The ambiance is visually very pleasing. Initially, the noise from adjacent movie used to bother me very much. But then, it brought back some memories of a restaurant in Cambridge that was right next to a very big public house. In fact, I have dined through the Black Panther, Infinity wars, Kaala, and various other movies. While sometimes the songs very annoying, more often, the dialogues just overlay over table conversation offering very good privacy of dining, and that helps me a lot, I am quite loud, and my kids can be boisterous at times. This helps me not embarrass myself more often than otherwise. The food: Personally I find the spread of choices very good because it has a good coverage of dishes I like to eat, steaks, burgers, customized pizzas for the kids, and a table top list of varying choice of local dishes like cutlets, samosas etc. Having lived in North, I know what a Punjabi Samosa tastes like. I was half-hearted on that order, but I was utterly surprised when I tasted it. It was authentic. The kids had Margarita Pizza, and I tasted a slice. I was taken aback by the combination of various cheeses that makes a Margarita pizza an amazing pizza for one being without any other toppings or flavours. Just like Vanilla ice-cream. It was another delightful surprise. Now, for those that know fine dining, they'd know that the value of the food is measured by whether it was worth the wait or not. Clearly, a few reviewers have complained about the service, well, if you mean the Service Quality is inversely proportional to Wait Time, then please do yourself a favour and don't ever go to try fine dining just because you have money in your wallet. That is an insult to the chef, and the person with the vision of providing such an exquisite service. Really, please don't ever try to visit my restaurant which I plan to open in a year. Just please don't.Now the food, the real deal. An average wait time for me is perhaps 30 minutes, some dishes come quick, some take time. So, in your fine dining experience, you expect freshly cooked food, not stale or microwaved-frozen food. Well, no offense, but looking at the reviews, I see some can hardly tell. But anyways, plan the visit as per your hunger clock and being aware that you will have to wait. My family and I start early, knowing that it typically takes 30 minutes, ensuring it is clocked so kids don't start going restless and noisy. Never had a "problem" with the wait time because of that.Next, when you taste a Samosa, and taste a pizza, and you can feel the Jalandhar or the Turin in it, then you know this is the real deal. Chefs have a signature dish, and I couldn't tell if it would be the Samosa or the Pizza, they were both Amazing.Over our visits, we have tried almost every vegetarian dish on the menu, and me, the carnivore has explored some. I was recommended the Steak, by Tanuja, our host, when she realized I had repeat ordered the burger on two seperate visits. Now, you see, a burger steak itself needs mastery to get perfect, but then for an actual steak to be great, is a much bigger deal. The error margin narrows down. The burger steak was quite amazing. Now, I had never imagined getting a genuine burger in India, other than the McD, and KFCs. I mean, come on, Dominos sells something called Pizzas in India. Do we people even know what a real pizza is? So, please, if I sound like I am writing a Eulogy, please backpack, get on a plane, eat across the world in fine restaurants, and then come and talk to me.Coming back, I hesitantly ordered the steak in my most recent visit, 3 nights ago. And my mind was blown. I could actually get the texture and taste of having a bloody good steak. In fact, the surprise to me was that it was not served with an actual steak knife. For a moment, I thought this was a slip in the detail, but when I could just slide down the blunt table knife into the meat like slicing carrots, I knew what my mouth had to expect. And again, it is perhaps in the top 5 best steaks I have had in my life. The steak sauce was perhaps the best I have had.[For the non-fine diners, please note steak does NOT come with Delmonte or Kissan ketchup, or barbecue sauce]So, please, if you are a traveler, and are into fine dining, do visit them when you come to Ooty. Be ready to be surprised. And, for those who want to know what fine dining is, here is your first access to fine dining. And it is very competitively priced. I have heard some people complain that the price is steep. Well, here is my simple arithmetic answer. Dominos probably costs you INR 800/- for a 12" pizza with glorious sounding toppings, that extra Jalapeno there ;-) ? Royal Cafe does most of the vegetarian pizzas for well under 500/-, and they are actual pizzas, not that open sandwich like thing they call a pizza with a crust that is either dusty with flour or too hard like rusk. They rarely are charred, right? Just so you know they come our of a conveyor belt oven with large scale produced processed cheese. Now, imagine eating while being worried if the "fake cheese" viral video you saw on WhatsApp were true. Just because they threw a buy-one get-one free offer, you ordered 2 pizzas for 400/- each, you rejoice it as a success. Just walk down to Royal Cafe, and ask them to make a pizza for you. If you find the names on the menus confusing, don't worry, ask them to make the nicest pizza they can, and trust me, you will finally know what a real pizza tastes like. You see, the easiest way to tell which brand of icecream is better, is by tasting their Vanilla flavour. No complexity, you can easily tell which is better. Same way, you try the pizza here, and then you will know what I am talking about. There are very few other places in India that I have had "actual" pizzas. This is among the best. The secret, I was told by Tanuja, is they source ingredients very selectively. That showed to me the moment I ate a piece of lettuce in a salad, fresher and tastier than anything I have had in my travels. I had guessed, but now I actually know the secret. :-)Summary: Go there for an experience of fine food and a great dining experience (just remember there is a movie hall next door)It is not easy to maintain such consistency in the unique delivery of different dishes. Sometimes something may overcook, undercook and so on. I am marveled at how every dish I have tasted every time is close to best I have had. One may try to disregard my comment by saying I am strongly opinionated in favour. Truly, I am not. It is every bit worth it
