Things to do in Matakana
My teens and I have previously enjoyed the service and lovely food at this cafe just out of Matakana. Unfortunately it seems that since the business has new owners this has gone downhill. We place our order, the cashier repeated it back to us, my son's food arrived but after waiting 15 minutes for my daughter's order and watching various family members of the owners milling around eating and talking with each other I asked again where it was. The food finally arrived after another 20 minutes. As we were leaving we were called over by a waitress who said we owed more money. It seems my daughter's fries were not added to our original order despite it being repeated back to me by the cashier so we had to pay more money. The excuse I got was that the cashier does not speak much english. Not impressed with the service here and the lack of apology, why would you put a person with limited understanding of the english language out front dealing with the public?

We had the 5 course degustation dinner on Saturday night. The only thing we would've skipped was cheese souffle, but that is personal preference nothing to do with the way it was cooked (neither of us like cheese souffle). The service was outstanding and I would definitely go back and recommend to others.Thank you Lee-Ann - we are so sorry to read about the Cheese Souffle - but next time please do remember to tell us in advance if there is anything you dislike and we would definitely offer you something else instead! It would entirely be our pleasure!Do look forward to seeing you again, soon!

Award Winning cafeteria and chocolaterie. A Kiwi styled menu, just like our nanas used to bake: home-made cabinet food and specialty drinks. Next door in the Chocolaterie are hand-made chocolates, British sweets, Dutch licorice, Kiwi lollies, and gourmet
The speed of customer turnover and the numbers inside are the start of a good experience. This place is busy but the wait is short and the staff very friendly. We stopped for a bite to eat and a coffee, both exceeded expectations. Espresso was just right and if anything shows up a barista, its a poorly drawn espresso in a cold or large cup. This place has baristas that know their job and deliver a great product. They would teach a few other places!Good range of food and for the GF eaters, plenty to choose from.Woo Hoo! Thanks so much for the feedback, it's great to know that the hard work and training and coaching is working. I'll pass your comments onto the team. We really appreciate your feedback, and your lovely rating - pop in and make yourselves known next time - we love to make new friends! Susan

Discover why this family-owned winery has been described by NZ wine author Peter Saunders as "the regional star of Matakana".Just 39 minutes north of the Auckland CBD, Ascension handcrafts critically-acclaimed wine from both rare and well known varieties
I have been to Ascension many times for lunch but this was my first visit for wine tasting and tour. I wanted something special, to learn something new, to try new wines and I was not disappointed. The property is beautiful and the wines are special. The host spent so much time with us and answered our 100's of questions. We took friends who were visiting from Canada and they said it was the best wine tasting they have experienced. We decided to make this an annual tradition for us and our friends.

Great service and great food. Unfortunately we could not be seated inside, even though most tables remained empty throughout our lunch. Drinks rather expensive. Thanks for your review, we're glad you enjoyed the food and service. Apologies you couldn't be seated inside, these tables were reserved - we strongly recommend booking a table online when visiting to dine in the weekend :)

Cool looking place to eat or have a drink. The pizzas are delicious for the price ($24-27) but there are deals every day. We went on a Saturday and it was $10 cocktails which were delightful. The staff were very friendly and helpful.Definitely recommend booking at weekends. Especially during summer/wedding season.

Matakana Market Kitchen could have been one of those places with the captive customers, a lovely location and no reason to care about quality. What they have done instead, is make some interesting and innovative food at a fairly reasonable price. The lamb chop poppers were brilliantly executed and the chicken salad in the Parmesan cage, also very impressive. We also got ceviche which was good as a dish, but really not ceviche in the true sense, being made with coconut cream. Somebody in the kitchen loves spiralizing raw beets, as they appeared with lots of different dishes around, but I have no problem with that.We were there off season and on a fairly cool weekday, so your mileage may vary, but the service was as attentive as the seagulls looking for a snack.

Rothko was definitely worth a 2 hour drive from our home in Franklin for dinner which was a Father's Day surprise for my husband. An open fire in the restaurant was a welcoming sight on our arrival, food was divine, good value and excellent service by the friendly and obliging staff made for a truly memorable experience. We intend to return in the Summer to experience Sculptureum and would gladly return to Rothko at any time in the future.
