Taking a stroll up the constantly rising road to Oizumi Station on the local JR Koumi Line (which connects to the Shinjuku-bound Azusa express trains at Kobuchizwa), we wanted to see what Yatsugatake Club was like, but found this quirky but enjoyable Villa Afghan restaurant instead. They have been there for 40 years since the adventurous owner moved from the seashore at Fujisawa to the verdant green hills around Kiyosato and Kai-Oizumi. Yatsugatake Club is a quaint little nature reserve and restaurant that often gets airtime on TV programs; unlike the Tokyo TV crews have even heard of Villa Afghan. OK. they opened for dinner at 6pm, we got there 10 minutes and waited with some dozen others to be seated upstairs, in a dining room full of curious collected over decades, and were keen to see the menu. Yes, as we had guessed every menu item (a la carte) was curry-based, but with seafood, beef and pork sides, there was plenty of pick from, and we had a great green salad and a carafe of the forgettable house red, but who is going to splurge on wine with a spicy curry dish. The food had a somewhat brutalist tone - the slab of shoulder bacon and two friend eggs buried the rice on my plate, but the home-made nearly black curry was top notch. If you are in the Oizumi-Kiyosato area, evening dining choices are somewhat limited. It is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, and Japanese language will help, though they do take most credit cards and staff have enough English among them to get you fed and your bill paid. We were staying at the large Royal Yatsugatake Hotel down the road a bit, but we did not really feel keen on trying their in-house all-you-can-eat touristy restaurant, with a choice of Chinese, Japanese and "Western" (for which reservations are needed, dinner at 7pm) or their no-reservation a la carte "Fu-rin-ka-zan" restaurant that serves hotel-priced versions of local fare like "Houtou" hunter's noodle stew.
